IT Jobs/Recruitment

What's Hot
Hi ,

My son is looking for a new job.
He is currently working as a junior developer for a large international IT Consultancy firm.He graduated 2 years ago with a Masters in Computer Science and been working here for the last 18 months.

This is outside my field of expertise so really cant advise him on where to look next.

If you can recommend any good specialist recruiters or best places to look in this field it really would be appreciated.
I use recruitment agencies myself and appreciate how much of a minefield it can be.

Thanks

  • What's his specialism? Where's he based? What sort of roles is he after?

    I'll find out some details.

His main interest is in programming , currently working from home in Cardiff and commuting back and forth to Reading and London for meetings when required. He's more than happy to relocate.

    What programming language?

Some are much more employable than others!

  • JobServe used to be a good site, but you won't find many companies (if any) recruiting directly through it, it is mainly inhabited by parasitic agencies. However, if you know there's an employer in such-and-such a town, in a specific business, with a certain requirement then it usually doesn't take too long with google to find out who they are, then get at their web site, and place a direct application. There may be some that use agencies because they think agencies will filter out the less relevant applications, but for each of them I'm sure there are others that would prefer not to pay an agent's fee.

I thought he was into making software, not acting ;)

  • IME going direct when there is already an agency (or more likely 2-3) contracted will get your CV directed straight in the bin.

Cwjobs is worth a go, in Scotland s1jobs is quite big but not sure if there is a Welsh equivalent. Also LinkedIn is increasingly popular for recruiting.

If your son wants to make life easy I'd say as well as LinkedIn he should contact *decent* agencies directly and work with them to get a CV up to scratch. Much as many dislike agencies, it's the way most people recruit these days and you need to make that work for you rather than against.

The company I work for (Ticketmaster) are looking for web devs if that is the sort of thing he's looking for?  Let me know if so and I'll get some details (jobs are based in Stoke).

  • I'm in that industry and my employer has been recruiting continuously for several years as we grow. We have an office in Peterborough and one in London. If his skills and interests are roughly in the web/mobile development arena, then it might be worth him getting in touch with me. Feel free to PM.

Well, NWIS are always looking for programmers, they have a very high turnover rate, make of that what you will but I believe they're trying to improve and it's a pretty flexible place to work.

Hays recruitment in Cardiff seem to do a lot around .Net/C# jobs in south wales.

May be worth directly contacting Box UK and Sequence who seem to be looking for developers a lot too. All Cardiff based

    Good luck

If he hasn't done already tell him to put together a LinkedIn profile and add every bit of coding experience he has on there plus add a few groups (e.g. C# etc). The recruitment consultants will come to him.

reed.co.uk/IT - yes they are a large recruitment company but they have the biggest database in the UK of candidates and companies looking for people.

Also they let companies and other recruiters advertise on their website.
This week's procrastination forum might be moved to sometime next week.

  • CWjobs - banks & insurance companies
    JobServe - Web & database

    ... from memory

Electronics Weekly for embedded/realtime (but it sounds like that's not so relevant here)

+1. LinkedIn makes this very easy. Also jobs are listed directly on the LinkedIn Jobs site, many are direct ads from companies, not just ads from recruitment consultants.

Fantastic news! Was that through linked in as suggested? or the old fashioned way

    Good work :)

Incidentally, for the future...more and more employers are asking if developers have anything on GitHub these days, so they can see their code. It's worth him building up a library of code on there to grease the wheels next time.

YES it was via a recruiter who got his details from linked in. He also got five interviews and 3 confirmed job offers within a week via recruiters that he contacted through some of the other sites mentioned here.

Fuck. Literally 2 months too late. We were looking for a developer to take on the role of developing our software so we can get rid of the outsourcing we currently use (which is ok, but limits us a bit).
