Help!! Sliced my left index finger knuckle off!

What's Hot

Hi all,

Bit of a gory post, so I apologise!

On Saturday, I snipped the skin off my left index finger (long story - involved scissors and cable ties). I had a gig that night and managed to struggle through, as the hospital had glued and used butterfly stitches on it.

Took the bandage off today as they told me to, and the wound is open. I can bend it a bit more, but it's still sore.

I have a gig again Saturday, and just wondered wondered if anyone else had a similar thing happen, and did you keep it bandaged or open to the air..?

It's bruised and starting to swell, so looking for a way to get through the gig!

Cheers all!

I generally treat any such ouchies by wrapping them liberally with micropore tape.

I am not, needless to say, a qualified medical expert.

Left index finger is a hard one if you are play right handed.
I had surgery on my left index that took two years to resolve.
There is no way I could have gigged.

Honestly, I would get in a dep- it isn't worth risking your playing over a single gig.
Unless you think it isn't that serious- I would wrap it for a gig- strings pick up all sorts of stuff on them that could cause an infection.
I believe wounds heal quicker if left open but the hour or so you will be gigging won't retard the healing process at all.

Oh and we need pics. :)

Normally I'd agree but this sounds a bit more serious. Only thing for it is amputation.

  • I'm not a medical expert but I have read at least 2 Wikipedia articles so there's probably no need to consult a doctor

    Doctors is all swabs.

I learn'd that from an audio tape of Treasure Island that was a frequent backdrop to school-age dinner times.

    Arrr, Jim-lad. Etc.

Ouch! I lopped the end off of my middle fretting finger 10 years ago. The blood squirted 12" out. Couldn't really play for about 5 weeks. My bedroom toys were really dissapointed.

At the soundcheck for my first ever gig a glass bottleneck spontaneously exploded in my hand. Blood everywhere. It would have been very rock'n'roll if we weren't a twee jangly indie band.

Ha, cheers guys! I should mention, I have already seen a doctor - he just mentioned to keep the bandage on until today, then 'let it heal'. Only asked on here to see what everyone else did in similar situations.

3M micropore tape. Keeps the nasties out but breathable.

What did he say when you asked 'when can I play guitar/gig?'.

Well, when he stopped laughing, he said about seeing how it goes...

  • I too sliced the skin off the top of my left index finger knuckle. Was worried enough to ship myself off to A+E on a (fortunately gig-free) Saturday night, but they just cleaned it and bandaged it up. I tried to play the following weekend's gig with just a plaster over the top (as opposed to wrapped around my finger, which would have impeded bending it) but it just came off and I made do with wiping the blood off quick enough that nobody would notice, on the few occasions I bent it too quickly and opened the wound... Probably didn't heal quite as quickly as it otherwise would have, and you want to keep it clean to keep it from infection, but my finger was fine pretty soon afterwards.. Incidentally, I did mine slipping whilst I was sharpening a knife at home in the kitchen. The doctor at the hospital, and a couple of other people, looked at me quizzically and asked why I was sharpening a knife, like it is the oddest thing in the world to want to do. It was blunt! What other fecking reason would there be for sharpening a knife?!

I wonder if there's a way of setting up an auto-reply to this thread that just posts "3M Micropore tape" in answer to anyone else's posts...
