I find it strangely reassuring that Iowa wasn't a walkover for Trump and Hillary.
I'm not sure really. Cruz is a dangerous right-wing nutjob, but will beat Sanders in the national election if it's down to those two.

Has the US media misread the people?

Possibly. They've hyped up Trump because he plays to their agenda.

    Chalky said:
Is Trump already heading for the exit?

Also possibly. Maybe the Republicans have woken up to the fact that nationally he has the highest negative ratings of any candidate, and therefore won't win the Presidency.

Can a Democratic Socialist really make it to the White House?

I doubt it. Not unless he's young, charismatic and either black or Hispanic, which are probably the only things that can trump (no pun intended!) being a "liberal" or a "socialist".
Fox is owned by the Republican supporting Murdoch... and has a massively Republican bias... they're also the big news agency there... is likely that the other media outlets just followed the stories they were seeing on Fox and didn't bother doing any proper research

It would have been high fives all round in Camp Rubio yesterday.

Hardly. They're all nutters as far as I'm concerned. Just wondering why someone is so desperate to paint yesterday as a failure and a sore defeat for him when all the evidence suggests otherwise.

I'm not sure about Rubio being a loser here.He came third, very close to Trump.

Cruz got 27.65%Trump got 24.31%That is just over half the votes (52%) to those two candidates.Rubio got 23%.

Al Jazeera commentary today discusses other Republican nominees dropping out now and supporting him.If this is turned into a 3 horse race- Trump, Cruz & Rubio then there is only one nominee that the Republican machine can tolerate. They hate Cruz and dislike Trump.

Sure, they aren't the one making the choice but if they can a greater percentage of non-Trump & Cruz supporters to support Rubio then he has a much stronger chance.

He only needed around 9000 more votes to win in Iowa.If Ben Carson drops out, or Paul and Bush drop out (or all 3) then he had a very good chance.
I'm frankly amazed Carson got anywhere near a go at running. I saw him on the Republican TV debate back in September and he could barely string a sentence together, let alone think on his feet in response to some of the questions.. And this is on a program where they all would have been primed and polished by advisers beforehand. Trump came across like a hybrid of Winston Churchill and Laurence Olivier in comparison. I think the only card Carson can play is, he's a black professional, he might be able to mop up some votes that way.

The really scary thing is that Carson is a neurosurgeon. I'm not sure what that says about the standard of medical competence in the US...

WAS a neurosurgeon. I think. At least I hope so. It'd be like Bill Cosby poking around inside your head.

Rand Paul has dropped out now- he is more moderate than Rubio so not sure how many of those votes he will pick up.

    And now...?

Rubio in a Bible state: third
Rubio in a moderate state: fifth.

If Paul leaving the race was meant to help Rubio, it hasn't. The near-collapse of Ben Carson hasn't helped him either.

South Carolina in 2012 had a lot of born again Christians voting. One exit poll has it at 65% so similar to Iowa this year. Can't see that working out for Rubio.

The RCP poll data for SC has Trump in the lead by some way ahead of Cruz. It should be pointed out that RCP's poll for New Hampshire had Rubio in at second, a  prediction that didn't occur at the polling booths

On the Democrat side, the Sanders win was expected. I am quite happy to see anyone other than Clinton win. Madeleine Albright's regurgitated comments about Hell when endorsing Clinton are the worst kind of lofty left-wing preaching.

I think Rubio is finished now, thanks to Christie. He completely destroyed him.

I don't like Hillary either but Sanders' success worries me, even though he's the closest to who I would like to see as President. If he gets the nomination I don't expect a majority of Americans to vote for a "socialist" by his own claim. That makes President Trump more likely, or even worse Cruz.

A few of my friends who have never voted in a presidential election have told me they will vote for Sanders if trump wins the republican nomination purely to keep him out of the White House.

I would imagine a lot of Americans who are already jaded by the system will get off their asses and vote this time for the same reason.

Let's hope so. Trump at least does have the highest negative ratings of any candidate overall.

But expect no punches pulled against Sanders. He will be portrayed as every kind of American bogeyman from the 1950s onwards - remember that the c-word doesn't have four letters in the USA - it has nine, or six in the shortened form...

I don't think he's finished yet. If he dramatically changes his debate style then it gives instant ammunition to Christie who will ask him who coached him. Carson is so low down now that I think he'll quit after South Carolina. Christie will get encouragement to go on because appearing on debates is his opportunity to keep preaching his kind of politics.

Anti-establishment is the theme of New Hampshire. Trump and Sanders winning is the electorate endorsing that. Clinton represents stagnation. Her campaign has been cringeworthy. Watching Albright dish out lines she used in 2008 or Lena Dunham mucking about in her Hillary dress, she conveys the same air of left-wing stagnation that Brown and Miliband served up. I can't say that I'd find a Cruz or Trump presidency any less tasteful than President Clinton Mk 2.

It's odd that we are paying so much attention to the choosing of an opposition party candidate in a foreign land.

I reckon 99% of people in the UK couldn't name any other likely challenger to Jeremy Corbyn and 50% probably have never even heard of him !

To be fair, that's cos (for better or worse) they're electing the new leader of the free world. Whereas who we have in charge affects them very little in comparison.

FWIW I think Obama has been unspectacular but his heart is in the right place. All of this lot appear to be far worse.

Can we just let Jon Stewart do it?
