    ...you all missing the plot!

Rather than be triumphant and still trying to indoctrinate others to your musical tastes, why not subject everyone present to utmost misery? So several Leonard Cohen's one after the other should do the trick!

OK so mine are: "After the Deluge" - Jackson Browne going in

.....and coming out "Keep Me In Your Heart For a While" - Warren Zevon

......but just when you think it's all over I want "Life's Been Good To Me" Joe Walsh..........send 'em off with a smile.

St James Infirmary by Louis Armstrong. That should get everyone crying, even people who hated me while I was alive.

Funerals should be a celebration of a person's life, imo.

I loved my dad's funeral. One of the best days of my life as we only got one chance at it and we got it right..

Music-wise, at the start of the service we had 'The Entertainer' playing, and as the coffin got walked out of the chapel at the end we had 'There is Nothing Like a Dame' on. The looks on some people's faces was priceless!

My old man was a local legend; a stand up comic, actor, raised tons for charity and was the panto dame for 20 odd years. We even got the Minister to do a comedy fall down the steps before the eulogy!

Haven't really decided, but on the comedic side I'm torn between "Filthy, Fat and Flatulent" by the Macc Lads, or "Plaistow Patricia" by Ian Dury and the Blockheads.

On the serious side, it would have to be "Leaf and Stream" by Wishbone Ash.

We put wee one-liners on the Order of Service and on the back page had Morecambe & Wise doing their 'Bring Me Sunshine' dance in to the horizon.

We really wanted to do a raffle or a quiz half way through too! My dad was always holding quizzes and fundraisers so it seemed apt and although he would have been tickled he would never have wanted to offend anyone so we vetoed it at the last minute.

Having lost my Dad last week, we're in the position of having to choose music for the funeral and it is surprisingly difficult.

Dad was a Crystal Palace fan, but CP's theme tune 'Glad All Over' is about as inappropriate as it is possible to get. Anyone who didn't know about the CP connection simply wouldn't 'get it' and would see it as several types of wrong.

Ella Fitzgerald fan too, and the obvious EF song would be 'Every Time We Say Goodbye', brilliant song and the emotion put into it is simply amazing. Listen to it and you'll realise that we'd end up with a chapel full of people blubbing which certainly isn't what Dad would have wanted. Also, some of the lyric doesn't quite sit right,

At the moment we're thinking probably go instrumental so there can't be any worries re lyrics. Obvious possibilities are Barber's Adagio for Strings and Einaudi's La Onde. I'm quite in favour of Mark Knopfler's Going Home as the final piece as people are leaving.

Anyhow, early days yet, but as I said in my first paragraph, I'm slightly surprised at how tricky it is to pick music that feels right.

Fucking hell though, seriously, who sits there thinking about what music they want played at their own funeral.

They can chuck me in a ditch for all I care.  Although being a single male with no immediate next of kin, the reality is that they'll probably keep me in the ambulance in the car park until I'm done, so I'm technically not in the hospital, so I don't drag the hospital's league tables down.  If there still is an NHS.

If I am buried and not burnt or found rotten away though, I'd like to be buried with a load of semtex and a 48 hour timer fuse.

I just think it'd be funny.  At least for a funeral 2 days later.

    We are gathered here....

    .....BOOM!

    ...What the fuck was that?
