  • If you ride your bike all year round, and especially commuting, a frame that has proper clearance and mounts for real mudguards is well worth it. Bolt them on and forget - no rubbing or rattling like you get with the toy ones.

I've SKS guards on my commuter, gives pretty good (although not perfect) coverage. I'd really like a nicer set of panniers though.

Short of having an exceptionally nice dry day some weekend, my Canyon has been cleaned and put into storage for the winter. The lack of mudguard eyelets really is a shame. I'll be changing to my Cube now for training/longer rides. The combination of mudguards and hydraulic discs makes it so much more user friendly, much as I love the Canyon.

To be honest, I'd be tempted to sell the Canyon and possibly the Cube too, and get something that was a bit lighter and maybe a bit more aggressive than the Cube, but still had proper mudguard eyelets.
The Whyte Wessex looks very tempting but is spoiled somewhat by the non-series crankset/chainset and 105 front derailleur.
If they put full new 8000 series Ultegra on it, even if it meant raising the price by a couple of hundred quid, I'd be very tempted, even if it is on the portly side.

The other possibility is to wait for the new top of the range Cube Attain GTC disc to be discounted at the end of next year to about £1400. It's a fair bit lighter than the Whyte, and has full Ultegra 8000, and very slick tailor-made mudguards.
It's not the raciest geometry though, and very much non-aero, but I have to say I find the Cube Attain geometry very comfortable.

My local bike shop won't fit my mudguards because the disc brakes are in the way.

So I'll need to bodge them on myself :( disappointed.

Can't remember if I already asked, but any suggestions for a decent turbo trainer around the £100 mark? Something not obscenely noisy would be nice. Need something to keep the legs going now the nights are drawing in!

    Anyone using TRP HY/RD brakes?

I'm considering changing the TRP Mira ones on mine for a set for better braking and less of a faff to set up..

They're about £140 a set though which is a reasonably large amount to spend on a bike that cost be £240

Upgraded the wheels on the track bike. Disc definitely makes a difference keeping the speed going and getting my best results ever in the track league although whether that's the wheels or getting better at race craft is debatable...

I'd look at Wiggle's eBay outlet who quite often blow out turbo. Thus one is supposed to be good value (I think it's the replacement for the one I have which has speed, power etc)

Just replaced the whole drivetrain on the long-suffering singlespeed - ring, chain and a lovely 72-point pickup Halo Clickster freewheel. Utter bliss.

Stuck with 68 gear inches for town work even though it's a bit spinny. It isn't the hills that's the problem, it's the headwind days.

    Thread resurrection bump.

No new bikes for the next year I think (although the Fairlight Strael 2.0 looks like I could happily own it as my only bike).

What I did get was some new parts for my Cube. I never loved the RS505 shift quality so got a second hand set of RS685 shifters on eBay along with some Ice Tec rotors. Added to that I got new Ultegra 6800 front and rear mech to replace the 105 stuff that was on it. Completing the overhaul was an Ultegra cassette I had spare and I'll be getting a 6800 chainset when funds allow.

It's made a huge difference to the shifting, and as a bonus I've put the RS505 shifters and derailleurs along with some RS785 calipers that came with the shifters on my commuting bike to replace the distinctly average Tektro Mira brakes that were on it

  • Good upgrades! Just fyi, the only difference between the 105 and Ultegra chain sets is weight. They are exactly the same engineering. Unless you will really notice a few grams you could save yourself a fair chunk

Cheers! I'll be buying used so hopefully won't be too expensive, and it's mostly to satisfy my OCD with everything matching!
The 105 front mech seems to be virtually identical to the Ultegra one too

Will get a picture when I can, but just snagged meself a nice Fuji 2.3 Sportif off of the ‘Bay. It’s my first road bike, so happy with the spec and what I paid for it.

Now I just need to find some decent clipless pedals and shoes - that’s where I always struggle cause I’ve got stupid shaped feet.

Looking forward to getting some miles under the tyres!

I’m an 8.5/9 normally, but I’ve got really narrow and shallow feet, so trying to get something that actually stays on my feet is the challenge!

Looks like most most makes I’ve tried I’m looking at a 44...

The Italian ones tend to be slightly narrower...but they're not cheap!

Hit a minor blip, the 105 band on derailleur from my Cube is 31.6mm but the commuter bike uses a 34.9mm.

On the plus side Decathlon are clearing out 5800 and 6800 front derailleurs cheap (£17 and £21 respectively), well worth a look if anyone is upgrading
