Budget

What's Hot
Osborne is a twat.

Longer school day means not only is it hell getting to work, going home will also be hell.

His "Lifetime ISA" looks like a scam.

I don't like his stealth tax on Insurance (although it isn't new), neither do I like his sugary drink tax

He's a twat

I thought it sounded like a sensible budget.

On second thoughts, I never heard him say anything about tax on beer, wine or spirits, so will reserve judgment until further notice.

He's left those alone. Maybe it's not all bad then

The budget is always shit, everything can't stay the same (even wages apparently...) money's got to come from somewhere.

I'd like to see one Government, I don't care which party get a budget, stick to it and not waste money, then things like 1p on xyz don't matter.

I doubt whatever they do will affect most people's day to day.

    Not quite.

Duties on beer, cider & whisky are unchanged.

Duties on all other alcohol is rising in line with inflation - which seems a bit pointless given where inflation is at these days.

I tend to be better off under Tory budgets and worse off under Labour. Not that that makes one better than the other, but at least I can prepare for it :)

I like the look of the "Lifetime ISA". Need to look into it further, but it looks like a better 401k. I just missed it by a few years, but it will be great fort the kids.

What's the betting that a future government will change the rules on them to carry out a massive land-grab of the country's savings again?

Protecting public services, my arse...pilfering a couple of billion out of the back door by raiding public sector pensions is a real kick in the teeth for teachers, doctors, etc.

To go back to Phil's first point, Gideon's got a teacher recruitment and retention crisis. They can open schools as long as they want. It won't tackle that fundamental problem.

And is Gideon tooting on the hard stuff again? His voice was unusually nasal and squeaky today, even for him.

The state schools in my area are moslty academies and are all open to 5.00pm. They have sport and clubs or kids can do their homework. The teachers volunteer and are paid overtime - my niece is a sports teacher and she thinks it's great. She gets extra cash which is welcome as she's only been a teacher for a few years.

Back in the 70s my school day finished at 4:00 pm - my old school shorted the school day by 45 minutes in the 1980s so I don't get all this Victorian bollocks.

    @fretwired Who's talking Victorian bollocks?

My son starts early and finishes school at 2:55 each day. Shall we swap anecdotes all day or shall we engage with the point I made?

I was making reference to the fact that there's been an underlying difficulty for at least 15 years with retaining teachers.

This is now being compounded by a significant fall in people enrolling to train as teachers.

You can organise a school anyway you want. The bottom line is there ain't enough teachers to go round and the workforce is in danger of shrinking further.

So on one hand he raises low and high income tax ceilings but on the other cuts £30 a week from disabled people's benefits? Osborne and his Tory chums are really lovely, aren't they? :x

as if that'll save much. How many disabled people get benefits x £30 x 52 = a year's savings = I guess not a lot compared to what the EU pisses up the wall every weekend!¬

Reel you neck in @skarloey ; I wasn't talking about any comment you made. My comment was directed at Osborne who in the press release said he wanted to put an end to the Victorian 3.30 bell. I was merely pointing out that when I was at school the school day was longer than it is now.

My sincere apologies @Fretwired. I just initially read it as directly critical of what I was saying. I now see your point and I'm not here to make enemies. It's been a long day and I stand down. Neck duly retracted.

For anyone reading who may be affected (i.e. anyone with kids in 2dy school) the lack of new entrants into the profession should be of concern to us all, as should the lack of subject specialists especially in maths and languages.

Not a problem. Just wish the Tories would stick to real facts and the truth rather than writing misleading soundbites that play well with Daily Mail and Telegraph readers.

Sure, I diversify quite a lot just in case, I don't trust *anyone* with all my money. But if you are too concerned about this stuff, you end up burying gold in the garden.

And if the extent of the kicking given to the Chancellor is laregly restricted to a tax on teeth rotting drinks, that isn't a bad day at the office!

As for teachers, I posted on another thread, but all the teachers apart from one at my kid's village school have taken redundancy over the past few weeks. Either they had a bloody good package, or they have no concerns about walking into another job.
