I'm not really much into singer-songwriter music.  But I like Thea Gilmore.  And Matthew Sweet.  And Bob Mould.  Oh, and PJ Harvey.

This is one of the best threads we have ever had.
Thanks to @Winny_Pooh for pointing us towards Joanna Newsom.

    Steve Earle - Guitar Town

Rodney Crowell - Diamonds & Dust

Guy Clark - there isn't a bad album to be found....in fact, I'd put him at No. 1 of any songwriters list just for the stories

No-one has said David Ford yet cos no-one knows who he is, but he's excellent.

And +1 for Ryan Adams and Beck's Morning Phase

Saw him live a few years ago as support for Teddy Hompson in Bridport. Very good.
I've seen him fronting his old band Easyworld, solo with a band and solo on his own and every single performance was excellent. Seems a nice chap too.

So that would be someone who sings and writes their own songs? Off the top of my head:

    Richard Youngs - Sapphie
Rivulets - You Are My Home
Sharon Van Etten - Are We There (if modern artists were allowed classic albums, this would be one)

Joe Satriani - flying in a blue dream
Roland said: Scales are primarily a tool for categorising knowledge, not a rule for what can or cannot be played.
Supportact said: [my style is] probably more an accumulation of limitations and bad habits than a 'style'.

Now look what you've done - I had one CD sitting in my Amazon basket (Counting Crows - Somewhere Under Wonderland) - but with your reminder that I wanted some Sharon Van Etten, plus My Morning Jacket's Evil Urges, I ended up 17p short of the £20 free postage so I had to buy Talking Heads' Fear Of Music too!

Richard Hawley - take your pick but Coles Corner is a nice introduction...

    It contains this:

I don't think you would file him under essential but fucking good seems about right.

Pleasure - it's also a star with a reasonably priced guitar moment!

As soon as I saw this vid I fancied one of those Italia Guitars - not that I could follow that!

His fellow guitarist Shez is very good...the whole band are tight as a Nun's chuff.

Incidentally I've probably seen him live more than any other artist...must be at least six or seven times.

The smaller gigs in the earlier days were pretty special.

I've seen him twice as a solo artist and multiple times when he was playing with Pulp.

The first time was at the Liquid Rooms in Edinburgh in 2006 not long after Coles Corner came out, was a magical gig. "Run For Me" was the set closer and it was absolutely incredible.

Don't think anyone's suggested it yet; I'm not big on this type of stuff, but when I'm feeling the need

David Crosby - If I Could Only Remember My Name (from 1971)
