Having just complete a gig full,of 80s songs my vote goes for Nik Kershaw's "I am the one and only"

And you know what else? Those safety lids on bottles of sanatogen. There I am trying to get the lid off and along comes my six year old and says "there you are daddy" and it's off in a Jiffy. Someone's gonna get hurt.

I absolutely detest that Prefab Sprout song. It's right up there with Danny Wilson's 'Mary's Prayer' as probably the two 80s pop songs that most make me want to kill the perpetrators.

    Written by Kershaw though.

But not in the 80s :)

Anyway, here's The Riddle. Anyone know what the lyrics or video are about?

Slave To The Rhythm. The groove and the rhythm guitar parts still give me goose bumps.

    It's not a competition.

The 80s were great for music so narrowing it down is too hard.

But for sheer fun and memorable hooks here are a few faves:

    Oakey/ Moroder: Electric Dreams

A-ha: Yes Take On Me is very fine but The Sun Always Shines on TV is a brilliant track and Alan Tarney turned in one of the great 80s production jobs there.

Michael Jackson's Beat It or Thriller. Those songs were everywhere at the time.

Cyndi Lauper: Girls Just Wanna Have Fun is...er...fun, but Time After Time is a wonderful song and a fine performance.

So much good stuff from the 80s, so just personal taste, but I think I might go for this one:

    with an honorable mention for:

I love Mary's Prayer.. it was the first song that came into my head...followed quickly by 'Bonny' by Prefab Sprout,  but the winner is:

Go West - We Close Our Eyes..

And let's not forget the extended mix with the late great Peter  Alan Murphy's awesome solo at 3:54
(oops I should be shot for that appalling mistake ..sorry Alan
    :\"> )

    Nothing

I'm pretty sure I saw an interview with him where he said the lyrics are just a collection of guide words to fit the melody.
He was struggling to think of a final lyric so someone suggested "just call it a riddle" and leave it as it is.
The record label played up to it and made out it was some secret that would eventually be revealed.

    It was actually Alan Murphy.

I was invited to the studio during the making of that album because I knew the producer and got to witness Alan Murphy and Pino Palladino working on their parts for one of the tracks.

    *This* is Peter Murphy…

(Technically this song is from 1979, but it was re-released in the 80s so it should probably, er… Count ;).)

Although you may know him better from this

Kershaw admits that they don't make sense, and is sorry that it irritated fans. He was under record company pressure to write another song. These were temporary words, and he didn't have time to write some more.
