Here's what I'd like from England Football team

What's Hot

Yeah, I know everyone is fed up with football threads, but ....

Here's what I'd like from the England football team:

  1. An English manager with a bit of passion about them, who understands basic tactics and also how to change a game and knows his best team
  2. The team playing with a consistent formation that they all understand.
  3. Players giving it 100% when they wear the shirt.
  4. Having a basic core team that you stick with, but - not using unfit/out of form players

I don't actually expect us to win anything, but I think that QFs are achievable and SF would be a big achievement. I genuinely believe that we had some talented players this time, but Hodgson was foolish with decisions and he has now set this lot back a long way in terms of confidence. We just need to get the basics right and play to our strengths.

I'm in two minds about passion.

I'd prefer cold-eyed technical excellence and execution of skills.

Bobby Charlton was asked how he thought the England team of '66 would have fared against Iceland. " I think we'd have won 1-0 " he replied. "Only 1-0?" Said the reporter. "Yes," said Bobby. "Most of us that are left are in our 70's now!"

They need to give up. If this was boxing they would have lost their licence a long time ago.

    Feel for soccer fans.

  • The English press dont help. It has put off good foreign managers taking the job before, and the pressure they put on the manager and team even before the ball has been kicked, its almost like they want them to fail.
    No wonder the team crumbles.

I'd have a set of rules for a national team:
    • Only players who are fit and currently playing, in their positions. (No Wilshire, no Rooney in CM, no Vardy wide)
    • No one makes their competitive debut in a tournament. (No Rashford, Alli, Dier or Rose). We play enough qualifiers!
    • Pick a formation and a style and stick to it.
    • Train properly (including set pieces - we've been shit at defending them for years). It's not rocket science!

Rashford, Dier and Rose were among the best players there!!
Id say they were exactly what this England side needs.

    +1 from me.

Even if they're labeled 'boring' I'd very much like to see an England team that, at the very least, consistently plays like they're 100% focused on a win. They get paid far more than they're worth which I suspects adds to the appearance that they don't honestly give a fuck what happens

Think he's saying that these could have been blooded in the qualifiers earlier perhaps?

Exactly; if you didn't trust them enough for the qualifier/they weren't "ready" then they shouldn't be at the tournament.

I hear over and over again how we were fantastic in qualifiers, but we deserted a few players who got us there over untried players.

Rashford ran around a bit, but I'd rather have had Walcott or Oxlade-Chamberlain on the bench,
Rose was exposed, and we didn't play a decent team. He tackles with his hands and can't control himself (as he showed vs Chelsea).
Alli looked great in friendlies, but had no real impact on this tournament.
Dier was fine, but other than a lucky free kick had no huge impact. Do we really need a holding midfielder when playing a back four against shit teams?

@chrispy108 you jest! Rachford was very good indeed, should have played more.

No, I don't jest. Chucking kids into high pressure situations is no way to develop talent.
There are exceptions, obviously, but he isn't exceptional enough to be one. (He's no Rooney or Owen).

    Hardly kids tho?
    What are the ages 20+???

At the age of 16 I'd moved out of home and was supporting myself with a job.
Not very well mind, but I managed it.

Painfully boring is fine, if you're winning. The appear to forget that last bit.
