Delays, where do you put yours?

Liking quite a lot of gain and drive I find a delay before the amp (or dirt pedals into a clean amp) gives me a horrible muddy mess.

So for me,in the loop, or after dirt pedals works best.

Where do you put yours?

At the end of the chain. I want it to repeat what I've said what I've said what I've said, rather than sound as if I'm stuttering

I like my echorec after my fuzz but before my overdrive.

  • Right after everything except volume pedal - after swirlies, too. I tried both ways but prefer swirlies into delay, it is slightly messier.

If I'm using an amp with a loop - then in the loop - tough after the volume pedal.

When pedalled up, I have everything in front of the amp as I don't have an effects loop. Delay goes at the penultimate link of the chain, before reverb.

In the loop I have delay>chorus>volume

I run the amp on the verge of breakup and use overdrive pedals. The delay is last in the chain, well theres a tuner after but you know what I mean.

I personally view getting a guitar sound as a variable thing. One works with what you've got and within each application. I dont like delay with really overdriven sounds so if I'm recording I'll run the amp into saturation (with an attenuator or a ZVex Nano) and use no pedals. My attenuator has a loop but I dont like a delay in there. Hence no delay for saturation.

If I have the time and space I'l run two amps, one 'dry' overdriving and one clean with pedals.

After fuzz and overdrives, before reverb and tremolo and a rat into front of amp

None of my pedals have a loop, so last in my chain, or second-last if i choose to use the Danelectro FAB Echo.

that beats the "inside of an old Valvestate combo" were I used to find pedals after a few years.

  • Fuzz / wah/ dirts/modulation/DELAY/verb - split to two amps for stereo effects. Also pop modulation and tremolo into loop of delay (Quicksilver Blackbox)

  • After the fuzz, drive, flanger, chorus and sitar pedal but before the reverb and trem.

I might experiment after reading this though

Usually after drives and before verbs. Having said that I once ran a carbon copy before dirt for some more adventurous sounds. Running delay after verb can also work well.

  • EHX mel9, fuzz, OD, chorus, phaser, delay, delay, delay, reverb (you can never have enough delay pedals) :)
