Nuclear subs - should they be moved to Wales?

I was thinking back at indyref time that  UK govt might start planning to move these to  locations outside Scotland, as a precaution
Although I suppose that the UK has a history of simply hanging on to valuable military sites, e.g. Akrotiri

Fuck off !  Keep those temples to human stupidity away from me !
Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine.

Nimbys. They should be parked in the Thames outside the Houses of Parliament, I'm sure that would add a fresh perspective to the question of renewal.

The Welsh flip flop over independence too and you really wouldn't want a stroppy taff deciding he was only going to speak Welsh on the one day you really need to put these things into use. Plymouth has fairly deep water near by.

Makes no sense to keep the facility in Scotland and it will pump a huge amount of money into whichever community gets it.

Safer and more immediate access to deep, open water, that it's hard to find them in (and where we seek the bad guys), is a good reason to stay up north...

These are military systems and that really should have some sway on decisions like that!

They should be where the lowest population density is.

Why? It's not like they are going to detonate them in the base...

The point of them being subs is that the enemy doesn't know where they are, otherwise we'd have silos in the middle of nowhere.

In the event of a nuclear conflict it would make no difference whether one lived next door to a nuclear sub base or 500 miles away. We'd all be dead.

And just to reassure those of a nervous disposition; there are plenty of other targets in the UK. The MoD ammunition facility at Kineton is the largest in NW Europe and is reputed to store nuclear depth charges and battlefield warheads alongside more conventional materiel.

Kineton's location in the south Midlands positions it nicely to send a plume of radioactivity across much of England in the event of intercontinental unpleasantness. I lived only a few miles from Kineton for about five years. Far from being jittery peace-niks, nobody in the locale seemed to give it a second thought.

BAE build them in Barrow, where I work. It's not the most densely populated area but it's still a town of 60 000 people or so, with more in the vicinity and at least two nuclear reactors in the factory at any one time. They distribute iodine pills in case of an emergency, and helpful instructions like 'shut the windows'.

Nuclear detonation even very near a nuclear weapon will almost certainly not cause the second weapon to detonate.  It doesn't work like high explosive.

Have a wisdom! The mechanics behind a nuclear fusion/fission reaction are so precise that sympathetic nuclear events are nigh on impossible.
