I've had a few Mooers and I can't say any of them had a high noise floor.

The Crunchbox and Angry Charlie are the same circuit. They may have a few different component values, but they are both essentially Marshall Guvnors with the tonestack replaced with something simpler. I haven't ABed them so I have no idea how much impact that makes, but they definitely sound more like one another than they sound like a RAT.

I've got both MK1 and MK2 Guv'nors - the MK 1 has a lot less gain than the Moorer Cruncher? Can't say they sound 'that' similar either...sound like totally different pedals at least to the original Guv'nor.

    It's "based on"

There are some threads floating around somewhere where the bloke from MI explains the exact differences including it having more gain and also that the Angry Charlie is a clone.

If you don't care about cheap then for 80's rock I'd go for a DS1-X into a clean amp and a regular old DS1 into a dirty one.

BD-2 is not a good 80's rawk toanz machine. Not even close. Get any other Boss for bettererer and closererer. Heck even a Metalzone with the gain dialled back would be bettererer. BD-2 lacks mids and can be quite toppy. A DS-2 (with the Turbo dialled in makes for a decent tone - the turbo mode adds a dollop of mids to the usual DS-1 sound. With it off its just a DS-1...so like 2 pedals in wun!

I had the ds2 and it was a bit fuzzier than my ds1, I'm not really into fuzzy! It's mainly for palm mutes into a clean channel. I think I'm going to try to find a Keeley modded ds1

    I don't think a DS-1 will get you chug.

DS1-X or AD is more what you want.
You could also try a power stack (I wasn't that fond)

@timmysoft there was a s/h Z Boss Power stack in the shop you got the Brunetti from.
I tried it and it was great.

  • I love mine, but at high gain it just sort of sounds a bit fizzy, I use it AFTER all my other drive pedals to simulate a slightly broken-up tone, as I run my amp clean
