FX and splitting to Two amps

What's Hot

Hope you guys can advise me. I have two amps and sometimes, if the venue permits i.e. space, I might like to play through both of them as a dual set up. However, on some occasions it won't be convenient to do to. I want my main FX to go to one amp mainly but a specific pedal only to go to the other amp. However I don't want to have to move around my pedals to suit each of these scenarios and thought there might be a device to help this transition that I haven't seen yet. I already have a Bright Onion ABY box by the way to enable me to connect to both amps ('out of phase' switch included)

I have to mention that my pedals go through 2 Disaster Area loopers so I'm able to make presets hence why I don't want to keep moving these pedals around etc. I've uploaded a couple of images to help explain my set up. Maybe I'm just making problems for my self and should just keep it straight forward and put all the pedals to one amp only when I use a dual set up? Just thought I'd ask the question though

I think it'd help if you drew out the signal chain and identified which pedals go to which amp(s).

I thought I did by uploading those pics? All these pedals got to one amp at the moment. However, I am wanting one particular pedal to go to the other amp should I use 2 amps. Is that any clearer for you? Sorry I'm crap and explaining stuff :(

The drawing doesn't show signal flow - what order are the pedals in?

Which pedal do you want to go to the other amp?

Not really concerned about order etc. I guess what I am saying is I just want my Lazy J Cruiser to go to my J20 amp. The rest will all go to the other amp I have. However, I don't want to have to re wire pedals back again when using a single amp. I thought there might be a gizmo out there that would facilitate this.

I'm thinking now that maybe I should just keep it simple and just go to the single amp full stop and connect the other amp when required which won't have any FXs through it

Get rid of both loopers and the Onion and get a Boss ES8 or Gigrig G2

There may well be. but without knowing the order of the pedals it's impossible to say.

    @Sporky Signal chain:-

Guitar (transmitter)– Wireless Receiver – Mobius (use the PRE/POST function so connects to the DA DPC-8EZ Looper) – Mobius into Timeline.

    Pedlas in to DPC-8EZ:-

    COMP - WARTHOG - FUZZ – LJ Cruiser –

DMC-8D connects to the DPC-8EZ via MIDI to act as a master using for preset selecting.

Confused? I am now. I think I'm asking too much :(

I reckon it's doable, but I think that's going to be quite complex because the pedal you want to separate out is in the middle of the chain.

So... in dual amp mode, just to check I've got this right, you want the extra amp to basically be wired guitar -> Lazy J -> amp, while the main amp gets guitar -> all the pedals apart from the Lazy J -> amp - is that correct?

Yeah that's it. I'm happy to move any pedal around to be honest as I'm not that fussed. Just would rather set the board up so it could be used as single amp board or a 2 amp board

I think you can do it with the ABY you have and a pre-post switcher. The latter would effectively move the Cruiser between its current position and the B output of the ABY.

Oooh that sounds interesting thanks @Sporky. Would you know where could get a pre/post switcher ?

I believe Bright Onion do one that has a toggle switch rather than a stomp switch, which is probably a good thing so you don't accidentally operate it during a gig.

However, it has occurred to me that the best bet here would probably be to contact them and explain what you need to do, so that it can all be built into one box with appropriate ground loop isolation.

Ok @Sporky I'll do that right now. Thanks again

    Or use the http://www.brightonion.co.uk/shifter-switch-patchbox/

But I can't quite work out which sockets do what to wire it up this way. I am pretty sure it'd work though.

  • Can't you just put a amp switcher first in your signal chain? Switch between a,b or both amps at the same time.

How does that get a pedal that's later in the chain to be fed to just one of them?

I did speak to gigrig and they suggested buying two of their Humdingers. Blimey we're talking serious money for the luxury :(

That won't solve the switching issue though - and you only need to isolate one output so buying two is over the top.

Well their suggestion was to use my DA looper as I have a few available loops there. They are going to draw me a chart to explain fully but it sounds like it would work but at hell of a price :(
