Just get the JJ for price and reliability. They don't colour the tone that much anyway. You're better off spending the big bucks on Mullard preamp valves

I decided on a matched quad of TAD EL34B-STR

£20 each from Hotrox.

Will let you know how they work out once I've re-biased...

Which is the same valve as the Shuguang EL34-B, only more expensive.

Yes, but for £5 more each I took TAD at their word over their stringent testing and matching procedures, over buying a simple matched set. I may have been sold snake oil, but for £5 I'm willing to risk it.

You are right, I do like the Golden Dragon 12ax7, very warm and rich sounding. One of the best modern production valves for V1/V2 IMO (I like it better than the Tung-Sol). To get any better you'd have to go NOS.
