Big Dog

Our lovely Newfoundland, Bear, or more commonly called Mr Boo or Boo Boo, has hurt one of his back legs, he's limping and it trembles a bit.  So being the proper owners we took him off to the specialist vets in Toulouse this afternoon to have some x-rays and a scan.  Turns out his knee is inflamed and a further specialist is going to have a closer look at the images.

But I ramble on.....  He's quite a big fellow, at the top end of size for a Newfy and we haven't been able to weigh him since he was a puppy.  I've always thought he was  around 60KG, perhaps a bit more.  We finally got him onto a set of decently large scales and he's 80.8KG (!).  Until he sprained his knee this hasn't stopped him being able to out run and out jump us.  I love big dogs.

His turds are probably bigger than my dog, a sausage dog....which makes me love small dogs more!

Apart from the turds and lack of being able to put them in a bag, big dogs are great.

If I lived in the sticks in a big house I'd have a few Great Danes.

Here's my boy....
The most perfect family dog as far as temperament goes (drool and hair, maybe not so much).  There isn't an ounce of fat or extra weight on him as we are uber careful about the welfare of his joints, although this isn't usually a problem with Newfoundlands.

They are really athletic with a lot of stamina when needed (originally bred to pull fishing nets and now used as water rescue dogs)  but ideally like to sleep most of the day.

He has a high quality complete food from Canada and in total, food and treats, costs about £70 a month to feed.  Another advantage of good food is that it is highly digestible, so what comes out probably isn't any worse than a well fed Labrador.

He's currently lying on my feet sleeping off his anaesthetic.

Newfoundlands are immensely cute, soft and huge though.  Used to be one in the local pub up near Chelmsford once, I always, honestly, thought he was a gorilla, he was a beast.  Stupid dogs.

I remember when my youngest was small and we saw one out with it's owner,  my son  asked why the man was taking a bear for a walk!
