Portuguese native, get by in Spanish (it is close) and fluent in English. I understand French and Italian but do not speak it.

    Somebody who speaks two. Bi-Lingual.

My French is close to fluent. If I spend a month there I'm spot on. I also speak a little Afrikaans and Xhosa.

Wifey speaks Spanish and English. I understand Spanish and can get by, but could really do with stepping up and practising a little more.

I speak Chinese pretty fluently. But I'm ethnically Chinese so I guess that makes English my foreign language?

Not me but my kids are bilingual. My wife always spoke to them in her native language and the grew up here. Still amazes me after 20 years when they just switch languages without even thinking. It's also a guaranteed A* at GCSE and A level without much effort.
That's the phenomenon known as 'code-switching'. Kids are like a sponge to language when growing up so its not so much as an effort for them to be bilingual if their parents' speak different languages and use the 'one parent, one language' approach.

You'd think, but it's not guaranteed. A kid at my senior school had a French mother and he was bilingual. Everyone assumed he'd waltz through his GCE French but he only got a C. Still can't figure out how, maybe he used lots of slang? Our teacher was mortified.
MIne both got A* in both GCSE and A level without taking it as a subject offerend by their school or college. We had a good look at past papers and they just sat the exams as extra subjects.

@grungebob Nah, I dream in English, German and Dutch. In that order of prevalence. Didn't start dreaming German until I first moved over here for my year abroad, though.

English, Afrikaans. Was fluent in German 25 years ago but haven't spoken it since. Should pick it up fairly easily again I'd imagine. Could almost get by in Xhosa at one point but now remember very little about it. Know a handful of phrases in Arabic, which I would love to be able to speak.

By that logic we'd all get A*s at English! :P
    Different standards though innit?

Definitely not the same standard, it always astonishes me that not everybody can get a C in learning how to ask where the station is in a different language, such a low standard that really does not prepare anybody to face A Level or soaking the language is a whole

I'm a fluent German speaker, though my English is pretty awful
Please note my communication is not very good, so please be patient with me
