    Hey,

Stupid price.  I do own one.

Is it worth it?  For the sound....no.

For the DI, yes.  So that you can use it with all kinds of instruments, you can use it with a PA without an amp, in that regards it is good or even priceless depends how much of that aspect you use.

If you get it as an OD/distortion, there are better ones out there.

It is totally wasted on me! lol

I had one warren. Couldn't really find a use for it. Loved the idea - didn't really use it.

  • I had one. Useless. In fact it has the honour of top spot in my list of pedals I wish I'd never bought.

As an overdrive useless. As a di? Ok But there are far better and cheaper pedals out there that perform that function.

Mine was really badly made too.

  • Waz what were you looking at the colourbox for?
I tried one out with a view to getting that vintage console OD/distorted verging on fuzziness when dimed and was totally underwhelmed.  I then picked up a Hudson Broadcast and could totally nail the tones I had imagined without all the fuss of trying to dial in the colourbox.  I ended up enjoying both the low and high gain settings on the Broadcast that I got a few mods done to maximise the use.  Haven't looked back since.

  • Nick,
Its a strange one really.... Been trying JHS Kilt and a low volume it adds abeautiful little bit of 'something'; a bit pre amp, a bit EP...

I was wondering if the Colour Box offered similar. I guess I'm after an interesting pre amp...

Try to find a JRAD Tim Pierce OD. That's an awesome preamp/od pedal. IMO of course.

  • In that case Waz the Broadcast could fill the gap.  This is mine with the sight changes from stock:

The side toggle allows to switch on an internal charge pump which takes it from 9v to 24v for more headroom.
The second footswitch now switches to the high gain mode and the centre toggle allows. this switch to be either latching or momentary.  It really is one of the best germanium pre amps in pedal format I've tried.

  • @nickb_boy - do you rate the Broadcast then mate ?

    There is a new 24v version I understand ?

  • I got a bonus from work, so it's earned money not plastic, I haven't broken the rules of the challenge, the cigs-for-gear challenge is still on!

I've had one for a couple of weeks and love it to bits.

Its as happy going into a overdriven amp as it is clean.

I've had lovely fuzzy overdriven tones from and a nice thick rhythm sound from it.

The biggest issue I have is its good at various points in my chain and I don't know where to keep it.

Its pricey and being 18v is a pain but it's going nowhere.

Would you say it's more of a fuzz than an overdrive?

  • I feel like I should have one of these
Please note my communication is not very good, so please be patient with me

It does more of a fuzz sound if the amps already overdriven I've noticed.
