    Fair enough.

I may be slightly jaded by having customers insist on 4K60 at 4:4:4, 12-bit colour and HDR in an auditorium where people talk over Powerpoint slides.

    I have a 4k non HDR Samsung and a 5 year old 1080P Sony.

Most of the time I prefer the picture quality on the Sony.

There's not enough 4K content yet which means that most "everyday" content is interpolated from 1080p or less. This makes for a substandard experience in my view.

In other words, hold off paying loads of cash now for latest 4K

I might be showing myself as a bit out of touch with the latest technology again, but surely 4k is pretty reasonable and in fact some of the latest ZX81 games need 16k?

do you think HDR will take off? apparently the Beeb are already on bored with the tech yet it took 3 years to jump on the 4k wagon..

I am happy with normal tv and with moving from a too big 50" to a 40" I suspect I am going to be happier.. but with Virgin 4k box around the corner and all that is it better to move up from full HD

    I don't know.

A lot of the additional stuff that goes along with 4k standards (HDR, BT.2020 and deep colour, fer instance) look like they'll need OLED or another new display technology. There's also a definite whiff of "desperate to sell more tellies" about them.

The other tricky bit is that the bandwidth keeps rising. 1080p60, 8-bit without chroma subsampling is under 5Gbps. 4kUHD60, 10-bit, 4:2:0 is over 11Gbps, and if you want it without subsampling it's nearly 23Gbps.

That's a lot more work for the scalers and requires better cables and input and output chips.

As for the telly, get the one with the picture you like and don't worry too much about the Top Trumps stuff.

  • To me HDR is far more impressive than 4K. Compare an HDR picture at 1080p with a 4K without and then a 4K with HDR. 4k with HDR is only marginally better but HDR at 1080p to me looks far better than 4K without.
A pity broadcasters and movie companies are not pushing 48fps. You get a sharper picture without the need for high resolution

I've got a 4k Sony TV, picture quality is outstanding. Mine isn't HDR though. Plenty of content on Amazon, Netflix and SkyQ with more to come.

Recently bought a Samsung KS7500. I know nothing about TVs and it was twice the price of the similarly sized 6400 model. But the picture is truly stunning.

The thing with 4k, is that it's only really noticeable (and impressive) on bigger screens (or smaller screens closer, like a PC monitor). Under 50" I don't think it's worth shelling out massively for 4k.

But saying that I just bought a 43" 4k LED TV, purely because I didn't want to be 'left behind'.

That's like arguing "Completely pointless to spend extra on any of it if you have normal-people fingers" when comparing a Squier to a Fender Custom Shop! ;)

Correct, and I'd argue exactly that point too!

The difference being that finger will get better with practice, but eyes won't.
