  • I had a moto E until just recently when it bricked itself during an software upgrade. Factory reset didn't work and I got bored with trying to find an older Android OS image file so I could reload it via Odin software.

Gave up in the end and got a new Moto G4. So far it seems OK.

I'm Tesco mobile £12.50 a month (always seems to be a bit more) which includes 2GB data.

What do you do for data for the other 26 days?

My monthly allowance is 500MB but I only use about 150-200MB/month, the other times the phone connects to the home broadband Wifi.

I go through pretty much all 10GB in my plan.
My car has a Spotify app that runs through the phone- if I didn't use that so much then I'd probably not go through so much data.

Although on motorcycle tours I go through it too- again, music streaming.

Does far more than I would do, I won't for example put any kind of banking/payment system on it on principle, I sit at a secure (?) desktop plenty in a day to do those things.

My phone is basically virus proof and the app needs my fingerprint.

Neither of those is true of your 'secure' desktop...

I have an Alcatel Pixi 3, it cost me £40 plus £10 O2 credit after I lost my Moto G in Reykjavik. It does the job well enough, but I'd like the latest Moto G when I can afford it. I'm on ID, £7.50 a month for 2GB data, 5000 texts and 200 minutes (I managed to use them all in one call once).

It just makes sense to me, to use the majority of the data when the connection is unmetered. I guess it comes down to personal use too, I probably don't stream as much music, but do watch videos while at home. Obviously I'd not be watching videos in the car, nor spend as much time as you in a car. But if I did, I'd stream the music at home then transfer it to the car somehow (probably USB stick) thus not needing to stream over the metered, mobile internet so much.

That is a pretty 'old school' approach- not dissing it, but if you have a data allowance that permits it you can stream everything you need.

I use Spotify set to 'Random Metal'- it is how I find new bands.
It requires none of my time to set up- I am not loading up memory sticks or faffing about with it.
I just keep the phone in my pocket and the phone wirelessly streams Spotify to the phone, the car's dash gives me artist/album/song, even artwork.

    You have kids though, mate.
If I had a family to look after I'd make different choices.

Yes but you're paying for that data allowance......if cost, or money, is not an issue to you, fair enough. It is to me though.

Yes, I'm paying a bit more- not that much though- about £10 a month for the extra data.

I guess it depends how much you use it or how much you value it.

Im not on my phone a lot in fairness, but the times I am on it it's been invaluable as a tool.

I wouldn't want to spend that much on a phone, but before I went sim only I was paying £50 a month for the latest phone (then the 5s) with more data than I could use and "free" Spotify.

It represented good value for money IMO, I just found a way to pay less once the phone was paid off, but when this one dies, I won't begrudge paying more again.

As oct said above, he spends more than that on coffee everyday-I know people that "need" their frappuchino from Starbucks every morning.

  • I got an iPhone 6s when it came out, and got some money off with an NHS discount.  I plan to keep it for about 4 years and then I'll change.  I only pay £12 a month for a BT SIM only deal, with 1 or 2 gig of data.  This isn't a problem because I'm always connected to wifi in the house and in work I use my work's wifi.

  • I don't think people are quite understanding the spirit of the question here. If your phone has the ability to take pictures, you are disqualified from participating - you don't have a cheap mobile phone. My phone - a Nokia - is not a camera as well: it's a phone. Admittedly it can also send text messages, but that's an embarrassing extravagance that came with it when I bought it.

I don't think you read the original post properly then.
The OP's phone takes photos and he finished his post with 'so, cheap or expensive?'.

He just wanted to boast about how much of a luddite he is. See any thread about facebook for similar smugness about being deliberately in the stone age.

  • Never paid more than 50 quid for a phone. Currently using an iPhone 4 I bought from a mate 2 years ago for 40 quid.

Will probably get a 2nd hand iPhone 5 later this year.
