Have you tried a different computer. Years ago we had faulty memory RAM that would intermittently bugger up image files although did everything else on. If you haven't already I'd try another PC or mac

Just a long-shot, but have you tried to open them directly into a program such as Photoshop? Possibly opening them as Raw camera data- it might be a bit long winded for 800 pics but y'know...?
