So dirty and distorted that I'm seeking professional help.

What's Hot

So - I have encountered a huge issue with everything today.

My house appears to have an earthing issue.

I am getting the most hideous amp distortion (like an amp tranny dying). It sounds like bacon and eggs frying through the speakers.

Firstly, it happened when I was playing the Deluxe. I thought it was something wrong with the amp. So I switched to the Hiwatt- the same- the L40- the same.

Horrendous noise everywhere.

So I changed all the amp power sockets and plugged in elsewhere. Still the same.

So I then thought it might be the rack- went directly into the amps, still the same.

Shit, I think- so I take the Deluxe into the lounge- STILL THE SAME. Take J40 into lounge- arrrggghhh...you got it, still the same

It is raining hard today- could this be it?

I have no clue what's causing this other than the earthing.

So so so annoying,

Any ideas?

Your neighbours have added a noise generator to the incoming mains?

It could be one of several things.

Is there something else running in the house today that is an occasional thing (heater? Fridge? new lamp?) It might pay to go round the house isolating things one room at a time (pull the plugs) and see if the noise suddenly stops. You willl have found your culprit. If you are in a building shared with others then it may be outside your sphere of influence. It could be the bloke next door welding up his Harley frame with a stick welder. Dirty power will tend to sit in a very local area, there are ways to get 'clean' or even balanced power into your gaff for silent running of audio eguipment, most serious studios have such a feature but the cost is not negligable. Cheap surge protectors like those 4 bar trailing socket jobbies are - just big brown jobbies for serious use. You can try something like a UPS power conditioner to see it the situation improves, make sure the electrical consumption in watts from the amplifier or rack is exceeded by the UPS device by a reasonable margin, whilst your amp will draw much less than maximum power at home volumes, the start up current can be hefty.
Or get a furman (other types are available) power cleaner for the rack. They even do balanced power packs for those with credit cards bursting....

  • Take it to a mate's house and make sure the noise is gone, just to prove you're not going crazy?

  • Check lights. Switch every light off in the house and see if that cures the noise. Its getting darker earlier now so possibly why you've only just noticed this (could be a light anywhere in the house depending on how it's wired)

    A couple more obvious things.

All this swapping of amps, was it with just the one guitar and cable?

Does you TV picture and sound system exhibit any 'noise'?

When a combo is just sitting with nothing plugged into it but the controls operated, does it still fizz?

Does you Furman have a voltage display? Back in the day it was a technique used to reduce the mains voltage with a variac and starve a valve amp so that it distorted at a lower volume, if your incoming mains is low it could just be that making for power distortion, that is not likely to cause fizz and pops type noise though.

YES. TRIED THAT.

I'm also surprised you don't own a power conditioner, which may solve the problem

  • That sounds like the noise I get through my amps when the upstairs hall lights are on.

Drives me bonkers. But at least I can fix it - it could be something a neighbour has plugged in.
