    That's the purpose of the tubes, to display numbers, they were a rudimentary form of a screen. 
    Why would one need them now though? Why would he go to such lengths and expense to make them again 
    Because they are beautiful and it's a very nostalgic technology

    There are some very talented amp builders on this forum, I think we should be requesting a nixie tube channel indicator  :s
    (they were the standard BCD indicator in my day, pre-dating the 7 segment display)

    Even when I was at school (even by the time I did A-levels in the mid '80s) there were still signal generators and counters in the physics labs that used them.  They weren't exactly new kit though... but built like they would last for ever.

    Very easy to do... Nixies themselves are not the most robust things in the world however.
