The N word.

What's Hot
Is the N word making a come back?I'm watching Luke Cage at the moment and also watched the hateful eight .
the word seems to be used almost every other sentence.

Never went away in the genre you describe. Tends to be used by black men to other black men in those styles.

    Or in anything Tarantino related.

I'm guessing you don't listen to much rap or RnB? It's never gone away.

  • ..and if it's being used in such popular media it's unlikely to disappear.. double standards
    My trading feedback

is it crazy how saying sentences backwards creates backwards sentences saying how crazy it is?

  • 80s/90s/Early 00s you would hardly ever hear outside the mentioned R&B/Rap but to be on a comic book series?

It's heard in excess in all of Tarantino movies though, he loves having his characters say it, so that covers 90's and early 80's, though it's used n shitloads of other film-Dirty Harry, Escape from Alcatraz for example.

Chris Rocks Niggers and Black People sketch is a fairly mainstream stand up show.

Comic book series? I'm not sure, where they around 20 years ago? If they were I'd guess that they were almost exclusively aimed at kids or extremely niche? They're mainstream now so you'd expect it in a "gritty" one to prove it's urban/gritty credentials.

I'm not sure it's being used anymore or less.

I'm pretty sure it was still around. Maybe not in what you were watching, but it's never gone away even if the use of it has changed over the years. Blazing Saddles must have been one of the first to use it as an anti-racist device.

The comic book was at the height of the Blaxploitation era and the comics went as far as they could at the time.

It's not a kid's comic book series. It's a grown up series set in Harlem. I can't think of any of those in the 80s/90s/00s off the top of my head but if there were I wouldn't be at all surprised if had a few N-bombs.

I'm not a comic book guy but having Googled Luke Cage, and seeing that he's a black guy and mixing in the circles he is, to not have them/him using the word would be pretty inauthentic.

Having recorded a shed load of rap over the years I've learnt it doesn't mean what it used to mean .... it's doesn't even necessarily mean what we think at any given time it means but rather it's meaning in defined by who's using in in what context ..... for example a white rapper sharing bars with a black rapper can refer to him as my N and that's fine among them as friends. A white foreman on a building site referring to one of his black labourers as an N would be completely wrong

I thought the N-word as used by black people is OK but if its used by white people its racist.

That's impossibru. I've been told for 20 years that any time I use the word gay, I am being homophobic. HOW CAN THIS BE!?!

That's a bit of an oversimplification. I think it's more about whether it's used as endearment among peers or not.

I have a friend who is of subcontinental Asian heritage and her white best friend (and white husband) call her "Brown Face". She seems perfectly happy about it.

    Not sure ...

Dear white people, and I really need you to listen here: you can’t use the n-word. Everyone knows you can’t – it’s not up for debate. It doesn’t matter who you think your friends are, where you grew up or how many times you’ve heard it in a rap song: if you are white, you are not allowed to use it. Being banned from using the n-word is maybe the sum total of reparations for slavery and Jim Crow that black people are ever going to realistically extract from white people, and it’s a very small price to pay at that.

That's just one person's opinion though, one black person doesn't speak for all in the same way I don't speak for all white people.

I have used it when talking to black friends, but it's very group and context specific, on the whole it's better just left unsaid though IMHO (but that goes for everyone, including black people).
