I have been wondering for some time, if it would be possible to create a vintage instrument based investment fund, crowd funded, where the instruments are hired out to generate revenue, all appreciate, the investors had a time share of the instruments each year and so on?

i believe it's a no brainier and very doable.

A bit like s classic car club with a twist. Doable but musical instruments are delicate, if you get one loaned to a butter fingered numpty and it gets damaged it's not like with a car that can get repaired and full value is restored (see what I did there?).

  • Have you seen this? In the Tanrantion movie "The Hateful 8 ", a guitar was smashed. Unfortunately they hadn't replaced the 1870 Martin with a prop. That fund no longer lends out vintage instruments.

  • I'm pretty sure I can dent a guitar just by looking at it.

    Me too.

It could work though - especially if "working" grade instruments were used. That way, any extra wear, within reason, merely adds to the charm of playing it.

    I like the idea.

  • Isn't there a company that already does this? I'm sure I've seen it mentioned on here before! They operate in London and are currently limited to there.

Not sure it would be viable - most of the really collectable guitars like Peter Green's guitar are taken and the likes of Gibson and Fender make pretty good imitations of classic guitars for between £2K - £5K. I'm not sure who the target market might be for rental? I have a client who makes, repairs and rents out violins (nothing too special - £5K tops in value) and the insurance is steep.

Another friend of mine collects classic cars but he tries to sniff out what will become classic and buys them cheap. For example, he has a Ford Capri 2.8i in excellent condition that's now worth around 12K. He bought it for about £3K years ago. If you can do that with guitars .. work out what might be collectable. And FX ... some pedals go for silly money.

Nice idea, ...and guitar loan/ rental ideas have been discussed before on here, but sadly as much as I would like it to work, I think its fraught with problems, if you are an investor you wouldn't want to pay to use it?

So who here would pay to rent a classic ?

I think property is due a crash. Smart money has moved into wine - serious money to be made.

Lots of commentators are saying it and a few IFAs I know think it's on the cards.

Isn't stuff like that a bit of a self for filling prophecy? People say something isn't a wise investment, less people invest/people cash out their investments, meaning it gets less valuable, then because it gets less valuable more people take their cash out/don't invest and so on?
