    That's a fair point. At half an atmosphere (an educated guess on my part) it's going to be around 700mph.

    What I'm not sure of is whether the sonic boom gets less severe as pressure drops.

  • The sonic boom will be just as severe.
    so you will have to design the train/pod such that the shock waves travel down the pipe rather than into it. Otherwise you will get a higher chance of metal fatigue.
