  • I always sync to beat, and don't use slapback..

There are a couple of online calculators if you're having to manually enter, http://nickfever.com/music/delay-calculator http://www.thewhippinpost.co.uk/tools/delay-time-calculator.htm

With tap tempo it isn't a case of changing setting, but rather tapping twice on the pedal.
Also, if you alter your tap you can get other subdivisions.

I use a dotted 8th note with a low feedback and mix level.

I use either a generic slapback on my H9 or the slapback on my Keeley 30ms. It's not "always on" - only if I want a sound with slapback.

I have a very faint digi delay set on timeline as a "default" it's at 145ms with low repeats and low mix, amlost simulates a bit of verb. Then gets replaced with a more specific delay for solos or parts of a song, using midi presets.
I'm looking into setting up an expression pedal to control the mix of all the delays so I can dial them in in live situations a bit better.

Ooooh I might try this idea.
I need to fill a lot of space.

  • Almost always float around the 400ms setting, give or take 10ms either way. I never use tap tempo. Usually set mix at just under 20%, but ramp it up to unity if I want heavy duty rhythmic delay. Plenty of feedback, but mess about to taste depending on song.

Mostly use digital delay but love tape, analog and digital with mod for dreamy type ambient stuff!

  • I tend to use dotted eighth, quarter note or a combination of the two. Always synced to tempo.

A single slapback at about 20-30% at 330ms. I never sync to tempo.

It's a nice filler, and adds a bit without getting in the way.

Always on is inadvisable, to my ears.

It only works with a dark delay for me. I keep my DM-2 permanently set to 350ish milliseconds with a lowish blend and around 3 repeats. That way the repeats are low & dark enough not to trail over what you are playing but give a nice lushness.

  • None of my delays are always on. My gigging slapback setting is a single repeat (i.e. no feedback) at 86ms. The mix is about 45%.
    It's not a competition.

    435mS, 3 audible repeats.

  • I never sync to tempo either, but would have delay in the 250 - 300ms range with about two or three repeats, mostly an analog setting on my Boss DD7 or DD500.

  • Note to builders...tap tempo isn't always necessary, yours sincerely, TFB.

I like a good slapback, and a good washed out ambient type delay. I don't do any 'Edge' type delays, doesn't do much for me.

I used to be really obsessive about tap tempo.  If the delays weren't in synch I felt uncomfortable.
Then a new smaller board meant the DD-20 had to go and space issues meant I couldn't get the tap foot switch cable into the DD-7.
The sky did not fall in.
There was not a single song in the set where tap tempo was essential.
So these days I just rotate the knob to where the echoes are either short, medium, or long.  (Probably about 150ms, 300ms; 400ms); two or three repeats; and a dark tonal quality.
Using a Flashback Mini which is gloriously unsophisticated but actually sounds fine.

Does everyone who's replied to this thread seriously use delay as an always on effect?
On all the time they play guitar?

I can only imagine how annoying that would sound.

440ms, 6 repeats and 380ms 6 repeats would be my two most used settings.
