Have delay pedals enhanced your emotional wellbeing?

i was feeling pretty physically stressed earlier between one thing and another, and distracted myself by firing up the Digitech Obscura and exploring the Tape function (I've had it for ages but always focused on the "lo fi" mode).

An hour  later and I feel so much better now.  It's easy to think of these things as just inanimate objects but they really hold the key to some lovely healing power when you find a good setting and get into the groove.

All hail the delay pedal!

Wisdom awarded. I used to love jamming with a DD-2 set to long repeats, once you find a sweet spot time seems to fly by.

  • It's very therapeutic. I like the dark analogue setting on the Timeline with the amp reverb. It's sounds so lovely and calming, can lose hours playing.

I can definitely lose myself for hours in delay pedals.

  • Spot on. I don't even buy a delay if it doesn't fulfil this criteria, nowadays. :-)

  • Try adding some slow tremolo - nirvana

  • Absolutely.
My wife asked me to stop singing Wonderwall.
    I said maybe.....

  • No I haven't. It just seems to remind me over and over at how bad I am by playing the same thing back to me, almost mocking in its persistence
Please note my communication is not very good, so please be patient with me

No. I quite like to use them, but no more than that.

  • I have 4 delays on my main board and another 6 or 7 in my pedal stash - does that say something about my mental health?  :)

Hours of my life have been lost well spent in big delay washes. I'm sure the neighbours enjoy it more than the hard rock and 20 minute solos when I pretend I'm headlining an arena.

My favourite for this situation is my Old Blood Noise Black Fountain delay. I get some great etherial ambient droning joy out of it.  Cheers me up no end!

In my younger days I used to lose myself for hours, sometimes all night long, playing through a Copicat. That was the psychedelic era of my life.
These days I find too much delay soon becomes irritating.

Absolutely. I love my DD-3, these things do seem to have some uncanny healing power. I just hope the body never gets immunized though! In all seriousness, it's a supreme effect, either to add colour or to make of it the core and soul of a song. What do I mean? Cathedral, by the amazing Van Halen. Classic. Flawless.

  • I find them incredibly repetitive....

Yes and i used to have the Digitech Obscura Altered Delay, it's a stunning pedal isn't it ?
With the Polara Reverb it was immense.

I ahve only delay built into my modelling amp now while i save up for new amp and new pedals but next year, those two above are coming back to me again.

For now i have a good DSP model of a WEM Copykat and a Boss DM-2W and with the on screen editor it's got as much adjustment as the real thing and sounds lovely.

    Yes with tremolo !

'Contouring' the sound for your room is very important and delays are invaluable - even if not on a delay setting.
