Overcrowding on trains...

What's Hot

They just keep stuffing them in, charging more the privilege, and then fiddling the stats to make it look good. Who'd have thought..

  • I was shocked at how overcrowded the trains were on my last visit.Tiny seats and people crammed in standing. Just awful.

How do they get away with this 'cattle class'! why doesn't health & safety do something about it!

I get a 0615 train (when it is actually on time) to London, and even that has people standing.. Just crazy.

Because there are so many businesses in London (in particular - I know other places are affected too), and so many people who need to travel there. And because mostly while it's unpleasant and a rip-off it's not generally unsafe as far as I can see.

Forget overcrowding, they need to work on their fucking punctuality. I've never seen it this bad in the 10+ years I've been commuting.

It's not the trains that are the problem.  There are too many people in London and the South East.

Massive investment in infrastructure by somebody/thing who doesn't expect returns inside of 10 years.
Or in other words, not anytime soon.

They could, of course, make the trains longer.  Or provide more trains.

Every weekday I catch a train to Victoria that is four coaches long and packed.  On Saturday, that same train will have eight or ten coaches, mainly empty .

Use two wheels.  It's quicker and cheaper.

Short distance pushbike.  Longer distance motorbike.

Larger gauge, which would allow for double-decker trains.

Some of the bridges might disagree vehemently.

Who *cares* what the bridges think!!

Actually, I assumed they were part of the railway gauge.

Wouldn't it make sense to investigate this? We must be in the minority of developed countries who don't have double decker trains.

Obviously there are going to be routes where it is never going to be economically viable to carry out the required civil engineering but I don't see ever increasing train lengths as being the answer. They run 12 carriage trains on my route onto London and if you are stuck at the back of the train when you arrive in London it can take you 10 minutes to reach the ticket barriers.....crowded platforms don't help either.

That will take more than a few minutes to do between Penge East and Sydenham Hill mind.
