So long, Leonard

What's Hot
Leonard Cohen has died. 82 isn't too bad I suppose.

My dad was a huge fan, so I heard a lot of Cohen in my childhood. Sad news.

    Sad news.

I wonder if we might hear Hallelujah on the radio today?

  • I may finally get around to learning the picking for Suzanne.

Where to begin? His "Greatest Hits" was part of my musical awakening at University. I probably also had "Songs From a Room", and then 5 or 6 years later bought "I'm Your Man". I thought Jazz Police was utter shit, but it's the comedy karaoke song which my wife and I murder in the car every now and then. When I met my wife, she also had the cassette version of "I'm Your Man", and I thought 'not bad taste for a Spanish'. "Tower Of Song" is, well, towering.

"Everybody Knows" is one of my favourites, especially after being featured in 2 great films - "Pump Up The Volume" and "Exotica".

I'm sure we will - hopefully we'll also hear Jennifer Warnes's version of First We Take Manhattan with SRV and Robben Ford....

I was just wondering if Len's originals would be played. His "version" of Hallelujah is hardly the most anthemic.

One of the true greats. Sad news indeed. I play in a duo, and one we do is "Dance Me To The End Of Love" - I love the dark but lovely and slightly humourous lyrics.

But it is, and always will be, the best.

To be fair I had a bad memory of it, I appreciate his monotonous old-man tone more now, just listened to a live version and it's mighty fine.

  • Sad ( although 82 not terrible).

Hallelujah apparently reckoned to be the most covered song of all time, outstripping anything by the Beatles now. Not bad for someone most people go 'who?' when you mention him.

    RIP.

Oddly enough that's one I don't have. There seemed to be quite a crossover with "Greatest Hits" but I should probably pick it up.

  • Sad news.

I've got his latest "You Want It Darker" and it's clear from that he knows he didn't have long left.

Ditto, my dad used to regularly have his songs playing in the car and house.
Think I'll put some of his albums on today.

Bit of a kick in the balls to hear this this morning, especially by the feckless means of BBC breakfast. Chelsea Hotel has been churning through my head since. RIP
