  • Very sad, but not unexpected, I guess.  For all the cliches about his music, a very genuine, smart and funny writer, and by all accounts, a lovely warm-hearted chap.

I've gone through fairly intense periods of listening to his stuff at one time or another.  Just a few weeks back, watching Hunt For The Wilderpeople,The Partisan popped up on the soundtrack, and I was off again.

    RIP

Tom Jones' rendering of 'Tower Of Song' is absolutely stunning. Well worth checking out.

One of my favourites.  Really got into his songs in my student days.
Funnily enough I've only just learnt to play "Suzanne" properly, after 30 years of playing something that sounded a bit like it.
Even so, that song gave me one of my favourite gig moments when I played it in an impromptu duet with a pretty girl with a lovely voice in a different country.  Magical song and magical memories of it.
    Thanks LC, RIP

  • Not sad I have been a fan since my early teens and you have to just see it as a life well lived. I always loved his songs the humour and the fact someone made a career with a voice just like mine. RIP Lenny

So many memories, especially around Christmas 1973.  Stuck in a shitty bedsit in Chorlton-cum-Hardy, couldn't afford to go home for Xmas, listening to "Songs of Love and Hate"...

    RIP indeed.

I know the name and I know the voice but don't really know his music. Where would be the best place to start?

Songs Of Leonard Cohen or Greatest Hits would be a good place.

Also Songs From A Room, Various Positions, New Skin For The Old Ceremony. Then I'm Your Man and The Future for more modern stuff.

Indeed. Here's a very topical number from it.

He's great. I have the book of his lyrics, Stranger Music, which goes to show what a talented writer he was: they stand up without the music as great poetry.

He was real dude as well.

One thing that has really stood out to me from listening back to some of his albums today is how impressive the orchestration/production is. There are beautiful arrangements of strings and haunting backing vocals with everything coming together to complement the song perfectly - amazing stuff.

  • I cried like a baby when I read that first thing this morning. Proper sobbing. Truly inspiring legend. Saw his comeback kinda tour in Manchester and he was wonderful. Great band too.

It's Leonard Cohen vinyl, pizza and red wine tonight. And maybe more tears.
