If I had to pick song then "sitting on the dock" has to be it. Closely followed by nights is white satin.

If I Loved You by Rogers & Hammerstein, from Carousel the same musical that brought us You'll Never Walk Alone.

It rams in a diminished as the second chord then goes on a tour of utterly masterful popular songwriting: it doesn't make me believe in love but it does make me believe in the power of applied harmony.

There doesn't seem to be a particularly good quality version on the toob so here's ol Mario Lanza's slightly croony take on it.

For a song, I might easily pick "September in the Rain" - recorded by many artists over the years, but I like this 1930s version a lot.

Probably Unfinished Sympathy by Massive Attack.

I can't help about the shape I'm in, I can't sing I ain't pretty and my legs are thin

But don't ask me what I think of you, I might not give the answer that you want me to

Not really but if a gun were put to me head I'd go for So what! by Miles Davis.

  • I've given this some thought and by the process of having to think about it the answer is 'probably not.'

The first proper song I ever liked as a child... and more than forty years later, it's still hard to think of anything that beats it.

    David Bowie - Space Oddity

"Take these three items, some WD-40, a vise grip, and a roll of duct tape. Any man worth his salt can fix almost any problem with this stuff alone." - Walt Kowalski

"Only two things are infinite - the universe, and human stupidity. And I'm not sure about the universe." - Albert Einstein

  • It would probably be Pandora by Cocteau Twins, but it would have to fight it out with Lazy Calm and Those Eyes, That Mouth, both by the aforementioned band.
My wife asked me to stop singing Wonderwall.

I've been lucky enough to play it in an ensemble as well.

Impossible really. Just like picking your favourite Child, which funnily enough also changes on a daily basis...
Today it's been my Son...and the song of the day was Eminem..Lose Yourself.  Yes I know I'm 45 and I don't like rap. :)

At various points it's been Hero's by Bowie, Waiting for Superman by The Flaming Lips, Baba O Riley by The Who, I could go on, but today this is the one that came to mind that still sends a shiver down my spine 25 years or so after first hearing it.

I was surprised to discover that the answer is 'yes'.

Revolve, by Rosetta. Pretty much the perfect pop song.

In terms of a pop-type song, my favourite is Kayleigh by Marillion. Great music, inspired lyrics, beautiful perfect guitar solo. They were also a band I was in love with at the time, and it was the best time of my life when it was in the charts. The whole package = win
