Hand up, who could actually solve the Rubiks Cube as a kid?

What's Hot
and can you still do it now?

I never did get to learn the moves to solve it at school, a couple of brainboxes did and I remember a queue forming at lunchtimes as other kids waiting for them to solver their Rubik's Cube.

I bought one a couple of years ago and it came with instructions on how to solve it and I got a few moves down but gave up and got on with other moe pressing life stuff instead. I may have another go, but I think it's something you need to put the hours in and keep doing regularly to keep those moves in the memory.

I could do the top 2 slices completely just by kind of 'seeing' what to do but could never get the bottom layer without a guide.
    Red ones are better.

I vaguely remember doing the RC once. I still have one.........somewhere.
I haven't done anything with a RC in over 30 years.

My sister got quite good with the Cube.

  • I forget the process now, but I figured out how to solve it a couple of times when I was 9. I do remember realising that the centre squares don't move for the first time, and a light came on :)

I learned the moves from a strange book bought from WHSmith.

I used to do it and raced my dad - can do top and 6 on each side but forget the moves to finish it - when I look up the guides I can't understand them!

I used to be good at it.  Could do it in under 2 minutes.  These days I can't remember the last 2 or 3 stages on the bottom layer though.

Used to work with the guy who wrote that.  Not sure why he worked - he was minted.

My 2nd job had a boss who was an annoying twat and a bit of a bully too.  He was always showing off how he could do the RC quickly - so we levered off a corner piece and inverted it - he couldn't do it and was mightily pissed off, more so when the gag was outed.  Never had the RC in the office again
Imagine something sharp and witty here ......

    Take to bits,

Put back together with colours matching.

    Easy.

Wasn't it a bit strange, as in it sort of looked like a school exercise book and was really more of a long pamphlet? Possibly blue in colour, not sure.

Ah but then it's all loose and slack, I prefer a nice tight one.  :o

  • As a kid I could, after learning how to from a book by a glasses wearing teen. IIRC he appeared on  the telly quite  a bit too.

Today I'd have no chance as I've totally forgotten how to ;)

My cousin showed me how to do it when i was a kid .. had a go just before christmas round my bass players house and couldn't quite get the bottom layer to go ..

i was a beast on the rubiks clock though and could do both sides in under 20seconds .. i'm guessing that was easier??

I could never do it as a child. I used to enjoy taking it to bits more than doing it properly.

As an adult I got given one with instructions. Eventually I could do it without the instructions albeit slowly. I've forgotten again now.

There was another rubiks thing that was flat that you folded about. I can't remember what it was called, but it was easy.

    Yes and yes.

Came up with my own system which probably isn't as efficient as some, so the quickest I've done it (years ago) was just under 2 minutes. Probably took me nearer 20 last time I did it which was a year or two back.

Six different coloured tubes of paint and a paintbrush seems to do the trick.
