Wristwatch advice?

What's Hot
To celebrate my new job (and it's something I've been thinking about for a while) I want to get a new wrist watch.

I don't really want to spend more than £200, 300 at a push. I have a few watches, but nothing super expensive
  •  a Citizen chronograph
  • A Gshock
  • Some huge divers thing
  • a casio wave ceptor
  • a cheap casio digital watch
Nothing wrong with any of those watches, the wave ceptor is a bit annoying as if you press the wrong button (instead of the light) the dual time zones send the hands spinning around.

So now's the time for me to step things up a bit. I've been very frugal in the last few months for obvious reasons. So now I'm after something a bit nice.

I bought my father a Seiko sea urchin watch  (rolex lookalike) as a present for getting over his anemia. I have to admit it's a lovely watch.

So I'm looking for
  • Something I can easily read the time on when I'm in the cinema
  • No chronographs
  • Analogue movement
  • Day and date display.
I'm strongly drawn to a Seiko SKX009. I didnt know if it was worth going for an older refurbished model on Ebay (6309,7002) as I don't know anything about them. Again I assume the higher the jewels the better the watch? I have fairly small wrists so I don't want anything too large.  But open to suggestions. Ideally something that I can wear with a suit and with a T shirt etc.
I would love to change my username, but I fully understand the T&C's (it was an old band nickname). So please feel free to call me Dave.

Up to a point. IIRC 17 is the most needed for a basic watch.

I've got a Hamilton khaki, fits most of what you're looking for.

I'd go for a Hamilton from your description but I'd have a look a creation watches for one or a seiko.

I'm a bit of a Seiko fan and the SKX009 is cool, but the movement is the same as in my SNK809, and that was about fifty quid.

(Actually maybe that's a plus for the SNK not a minus for the SKX, as it's a perfectly good movement).

Do take a look at a Steinhart Ocean 1. A rather knowledgeable friend says they can't be beat in the price range.

http://www.yorkshirewatches.co.uk Bought a sheikh from here over a year ago. Would definitely use them again.

This is the one I got, although it doesn't have the day displayed.

Thanks guys,I must confess I'm not that fond of the Hamiltons. I shall go into town tomorrow and see them up close. That information about the SKX009 has thrown a spanner in the works @KKJale I was very nearly going to buy a SKX007 for £179 (from creation watches). hmm a trip down town I think.

I must admit I don't like the SKXes, though I've had an SNZF with the same movement that's been great for 3 years now.

I'm also a big fan of Hamiltons. I have the Khaki Auto 40mm with leather and steel straps. But completely understand if you want more of the dive thing.

I wear a SK011 (orange version of the 007) and have done so for about the last 5 years. Solid dependable and nearly indestructible. If you want a 007 (or diff colour one) get one, they're great and sort of a right of passage for watch geeks. Also something to bear in mind is that because it's such a well known watch it has a large number of 3rd party parts to modify it. I have a solid link Oyster strap on mine which finishes it off nicely (IMHO).
Also Creation watches have been flawless for anything I've bought from them.

Nothing wrong with the movement in the SKX or SNZF, the SKX will have better water resistance (screw-in crown) but I think the movements are the same. For the first year or so, my SNZF "Sea Urchin" gained 3-4 seconds a day! It's not as good as that now, maybe losing 10-20 seconds - still very impressive for a £140 watch.

Seiko recently introduced a new model (Turtle) with a hacking/hand winding movement, but they're more like £400.

I love my Tissot PRC200, but it doesn't tick all your requirements (does have chronograph; has date but not day).

Oh, and the RRP is above £300 - but it may be possible to get it in budget if you shop around.

Ack, I shoulda kept mah big mouth shut. The 7s26 is a classic super-affordable movement - there's nothing wrong with it.

I regulated the one in mine a bit and it's within 5s a day pretty much always.

I like the 007, it's a bit more dress-uppable than a Pepsi IMO. Heard good things about Creation... go get the one you fancy!

Very nice, and you could posh it up a bit with a leather NATO or suchlike!

Already on it I want to like Hamilton watches, I really do, but they just don't really pull me.

Edit- Thanks for all of your help by the way :)

  • Is there a particularly nice type of leather strap?

I recently got a new leather one that's blue and looks nice, but I've no idea how long it'll last. The one that came with my watch (a citizen eco drive - lower model, but lovely looking) got wrecked after about 8 months :(

Recently I've been intrigued by these and thinking of getting one:

Seem like good quality, nice designs and reasonably priced.
