I reckon for black a standard wood dye would be okay. Are you trying to keep the grain or a more solid looking colour?

Go to B&Q and buy a stain from there... You don't get funky colours like you do for guitars but they have all the woody colours and usually a black one of some sort.
I used a Liberon stain for the base coat when I did a blue top not so long ago, it worked fine .. check this
