channelling his namesake Brian, James will plug in his reassembled guitar and hope he put all the bits together correctly
I didn't realise the Strat was invented by James Brian?

He's got a first class music degree, too, though he's a piano player mainly, so he should be able to get a decent tune out of it when he's done.

Wonder if he'll have a quick blast of Jessica?

I bet he plays guitar pretty well. Strikes me as a guitarist somehow

Well yes, obviously, but all I meant was that as a very proficient musician. he'll have had a go at knowing where the notes are (iirc, he once did a version of Jessica using engine sounds) and thus will maybe give it a go and might sound as if he knows what he's doing. I didn't say he'd be good at it, just that he should be able to get a tune out of it.

He may not, but he might.
I agree, with a first in music, I'd say he'd be ok on guitar, if he's has done a bit of practice, music is mainly about hearing/ear training.........

Yes, I do know that - I've actually been tinkering with the idea of learning to tickle the ivories myself, but that means buying a keyboard, and that's a whole new level of GAS I really, really don't need right now. :D

The '59s are generally considered to be the best.

Earlier ones tended to have thicker handles - after 1960 they were completely redesigned to a much more 'spikey' style - in a effort to echo the then-current Truimph Herald.

The revised ones were not popular and production soon stopped - but by '68, demand for the originals was massive, thanks to British gardeners like Percy Thrower using them extensively - they were finally reintroduced.

Now every year an improved 'closer than ever to the original' version is introduced.

    A true classic....

I watched tonight's episode rebuilding a BT telephone.. God it was like watching paint dry. It was so tedious and slow. Mays boring voice and total lack of presenting skill was sending me to sleep.
Don't get me wrong, I've enjoyed his toy programs and like the interplay between May, Hammond and clarkson on top gear but the pace of this show is all wrong to make it interesting.

Now, you see that's exactly *why* I like these... Not whizzy, not "dynamic", not "modern".

The star of the show is the engineering inside whatever it is he's working on.

For me, it's about being a nerd and revelling in it.

What struck me was that he's an extremely skilled presenter - effortlessly natural and interesting.

Unless your idea of skill is gooning about in front of a sycophantic audience of car accessory shop managers.
