I have £65 on Amazon and would like to get a new distortion pedal and am looking suggestions.  I've owned so many it's probably easier you guys just list some suggestions instead of me listing everything I've owned.  It has to be available on Amazon UK.

Nothing that sounds too heavy metal - I play rock guitar.  Ozzy and Megadeth is about as heavy as I get.

Is the Dark Matter an original design or a clone of something?

No, but I've got an old MXR Distortion+, and the circuit is almost identical.  I've thought about getting the DOD a few times because I could power it a bit easier (my MXR has the old non-Boss style adapter) and I think it's got a bit more level on tap.

Only thing I'd say is they tend to be on the brighter side at higher gain settings...the DOD is meant to be a smidge warmer, but never personally tried them side by side.

I think it's original but I could be wrong.

When you say the heaviest you play is ozzy and megadeth, how often do you get that heavy?

i haven't tried the 250 but i have the dist+ and unless you're willing to pair it with amp distortion i wouldn't really be wanting it for anything much heavier than classic rock.

I think it's an original design, I've just got one and I'll be honest I'm really impressed, it's kicked my OCD clone off the board, the active treble and bass controls are pretty effective, and there is plenty of volume in the pedal, so pulling the T&B below 12'oclock boosts the mids, higher than 12'oclock gives s more scooped tone, it's a very open sounding drive, more amp like than many I've tried, stacks into a Blues Driver as a mid boost for solos wonderfully.

@professorben well, I got the Dark Matter yesterday and it's just OK.  I play it into a clean amp and I definitely think I can hear some of the clean tone instead of 100% distorted tone, which I prefer.

  • @bingefeller hmm that's odd, I don't get that feeling at all from my DM.
Its one reason I preferred it over a TS type.

Also, I'm running it into a edge of breakup setting, or boosting an already cooking pedal.

I gigged the dark matter into a clean fender amp with good results but it sounds rubbish into my vox and mjw amps. I read somewhere it was designed to work with clean fender type amps

Hmmm that makes sense, the cleans on my engl are very fender like, and it's 6L6.

I run it into a clean amp (Roland Cube Lite,.....not ideal amp but it suits me).  When I boost the DM with another pedal the whole signal gets louder, as if some of the clean signal is still in the mix.
