  • This is mostly quite common knowledge - drip brewing and espresso are both very difficult to do well.

Moka pot and aeropress and French press are more forgiving - but you need good beans, roasted to their best and ground fairly consistently.

There is a guy who is, truly, a coffee nut. He puts us to shame, but uses science to explain his findings. I'll see if I can find his blog, but it's proper anorak reading. He helped me a lot - I wanted to learn how to pull a good shot of espresso and he said, "don't bother"!

Utter bollox. Chuck coffee in mug, throw in hot water, add milk, stir. One persons 'perfect' coffee is not the same thing as the next persons.

    Turn on Neff coffee machine.
Add an inch of milk to a mug steam for 20-30 seconds.
Place mug under machine press cafe.
    Add sugar to taste.

Perfect freshly ground beans taste great in the morning.

Personal taste comes into it, but this is comparable to a fender twin versus a Marshall bluebreaker. Both are excellent amps in class, but have different people using them. You can't really say that a Marshall mg is as good as a bluebreaker, there are very real reasons it is not.

Try going to the local micro roastery and espresso bar next time they do a taster - you may be surprised at how even the type of water can make an enormous difference, even going as far as making a coffee taste good and bad, depending on the water used.

Surely the best coffee has to meet only two criteria:
    1. It should be free
    2. Someone else should have made it.

    Everything else is mere frippery.

It all comes down to curly or straight water pipes, straighten the water pipe and you reduce a hell of a lot of "water noise" thus making a more detailed authentic brew. Edit Sorry, tired joke and to be honest I didn't even realise who the OP was until I posted

But don't ask me what I think of you, I might not give the answer that you want me to

  • I find the best way too get good coffee is the following:

    1. Do not go into Starbucks
    2. Try to walk past Costa
    3. Find a good chain, Coffee #1 is the best around here, or preferably a good independent.

If you can drink their espresso without sugar and without screwing up your face, it's good coffee.

I tried doing proper espresso a few years ago. More often than not I would either choke the machine or make it too weak.
Some folks like water, some folks like wine.
    My feedback thread is here.

  • It isn't great coffee but it's free and I feel posh walking around with a Waitrose cup, so if I get the chance I have one.

Damned hand-wringing tea-chuggers. Man up and accept your Johnny-come-lately status in this great island nation.

Or have a nice cup of your favoured hot beverage and a biscuit. :)

Everyone knows coffee goes before milk, and milk before water.

Yes yes yes yes yes, we were drinking coffee before tea. It's called evolution, gentlemen.
We also have flushing toilets and votes for women, you uncivilised bean-drinkers.

Both thanks, of course, to coffee.
