The recent ones;
I was born 40 years after the end of World War 2. 40 years isn't very long in the grand scheme of things. My dad was born 7 years after the end of the war. When he was born, there were still people alive who fought in the Boer War. According to Wikipedia, there was still someone alive who had fought in the American Civil War.
To have been 18 in 1945 you'd be 90 this year - soon WW2 will have slipped entirely from living memory. In 10 years time we'll be talking about the last few people alive who actually fought in that conflict, in the same way that 10 years ago we were talking about the same for the first world war - Harry Patch etc.
The '90s are as long ago now as the '60s were when I was born. 1991 saw u2's Achtung Baby, Nirvana's Nevermind, RHCP's BSSM, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains records... They're going to be 26 years old this year. 26 years before 1991 was was 1965. So by the end of this year there will be a greater span of time between the present day and those early '90s records than between those records and The Beatles' Rubber Soul.
I'm part of the last generation that will remember the world before mobile phones and the mass proliferation of the internet which I believe has altered society and the way we live our lives fundamentally. I remember a time when you kept your friends' phone numbers in a book, and knew some off by heart. When to socialize and be part of a group you had to plan ahead and make a physical effort to go outside and be in the presence of people. When to buy something you had to go to a shop that sold it, barring the occasional phone catalogue. When if you wanted to find out about something you had to go to the library or hope that it was in the single volume encyclopedia on the shelf at home.
People younger than me will probably be unable to comprehend a world where you don't have all the information and communication potential you could ever need at your fingertips 24 hours a day.
