Brighton

What's Hot

I'm taking the wife and daughter there this weekend, any tips on places to see, good cafes and restaurants, nothing too fancy just good food done well etc?

We're there Sat /Sunday drive back up to the north west Monday, staying at Jurys inn right on the front, so well placed for most things hopefully. Wife wants to see the pavilion and my thirteen ( fourteen on Monday hence the trip ) year old is obsessed with Zoella ( u tube Vlogger who lives in Brighton apparently.)

A decent pub to watch Utd on the Saturday would be good too.

Thanks

Wander up the laines, just have a good browse really. There's so many good independent food places that I can't really recommend any over the others, but the better food is generally in town as opposed to on the seafront.

And there'll be plenty of pubs in Brighton showing the big, burly, muscular men cuddling up against each other.

And if Instagram is to be believed, David Gilmour and Polly Samson constantly walk their dog (this is not a euphemism) on the beach....

If you're really lucky you might wander into Rob Chapman filming his latest blog with his hilarious friends, probably talking about changing nappies and how great it is just to get Youtube hits for money.

Although the Quadrophenia chippy is just back from the seafront and isn't bad.

But yes, I agree for food wander into the North Laine area (which we always used to call the "North Laines" but this means nothing!). GAK is here as well. :-)

For a lunchtime Kebab I recommend Kebab Express, if it's still there, on the hill going from the station down into town.

JB's Diner on the seafront does great breakfasts.

Be aware that none of the pubs in Brighton let kids in after 8pm..... we got booted out The Black Lion, despite neither of my boys being annoying or toddlers, they were 12 and 16 at the time.

If if you go on the pier, the chirros are really good and don't go on the crazy mouse ride - if ever there is an accident waiting to happen, it's that.

Japanese in Stanley Street E Kagen above Yum Yums is freshly prepared and incredibly reasonable. Just down from GAK there are some really good independent pizzerias and small restaurants (Mange Tout on Trafalgar street is great) . Superb bagel place down from Komedia for a walking bite. Riddle & Finn do the best squid starter I've ever tasted (washed down with glass if bubbly) but is pricey. There is a really good place on the front just down from Jury's Inn - Lucky Beach Cafe - who do a lovely burger and beer, reasonable.

Things to see: The i360 I suppose. The pier. The Pavilion/Museum. The beach. Just the city, really - The Lanes (jewellery shops, Choccywoccydoodah, pubs, restaurants) and North Laine (GAK, Pavilion Gardens, pubs, restaurants) as people have mentioned. The Marina is OK for a quick shop/lunch/bowl/cinema/casino but the mini railway (Volks) isn't running this time of year so you'll have to drive/bus. The Ghost Walk is apparently quite fun (http://ghostwalkbrighton.co.uk/).

Football pubs: King and Queen (big and iconic and novel and cheap and vaguely child friendly...but can be noisy when sport is on), Walkabout (on "The Strip" - West Street - best avoided after dark for drunken young people) umm...most of the pubs I like don't have tellies. Throw a stone and you'll hit five pubs, two of which will have a TV. If you were just out for a drink I could go on for hours.

For cafes and restaurants you have an absolute embarrassment of riches. The Hop Poles is a good food pub and kid friendly. Donatello's is good, cheap Italian. My favourite curry place is a bit out of town near Preston Circus but Chaula's is very good and central (people seem to like Curry Leaf but I prefer Chaula's). Sushi Mania (Japanese...not just sushi) and Day's (pan-Asian buffet) and Touro (Brazilian meat) will sort you out for massive eat-as-much-as-you-can meals. Preston Street near the Hove border is good for grub. Casa Don Carlos is a very good little tapas place but it can be extremely popular so book if you intend to go there.

Zoella and Alfie don't come out on order unfortunately but you do often see celebs around.

VIPs for Pizza - you might have to queue to get in though. Cheap and cheerful.
GAK to drool at guitary things.
    The pier.
Someone's already mentioned the Laines. Bear in mind that there are North Laines and South Laines and that the character of each is quite different. The South Laines seem to be mostly jewellery (new and second hand), while the North Laines have more quirky shops.
I play guitar because I enjoy it rather than because I’m any good at it

Hmm. Casa Don Carlos didn't even know what a Cafe Con Hielo was when I went there some years ago with my mujer. S'okay for Brighton types though I s'pose. ;)

CLICHE - the best Fish and chips I have had for a very long time was the posh fish and chip restaurant at the end of the pier.
