And it does depend on individual cases - a couple of comments above about black Les Paul Standards, personally I think they look brilliant with cream plastic parts, BUT if the rosewood board is a nasty pale brown one, the guitar instantly looks shite.
I suppose the nearest to a no-no would be cherry sunburst, that garish Ace Frehley type, especially on a plain top, can look really cheap and nasty. But even then I've seen a few cherry sunbursts which look good.
Too much bling is more offputting than the actual colour.
Red.
And, brown bursts, but I wouldn't mind it on a jag.
1 those red/yellow sunbursts you see on LPs sometimes
2 anything sparkle.
3 Most paisley
Any colour that clashes with my Marc Bolan cream feather Boa or detracts from my open shirt gold medallion and hairy chest if I am doing a 70s soul number
Its like the more expensive and blingy they get, the cheaper they look, you instantly think Aliexpress
Brown anything.
Not keen on white Les Paul or PRS but like white Les Paul Junior or any Fender in white/cream is lovely.
Thats all that I don't like about PRS in one guitar. And I say that as a PRS (USA) owner.
Anything bursty
Anything quilty
Anything flamey
I can appreciate the beauty of some of these but not really my kind of thing to own.
Now I think about my electrics are all black or white, excepting my blue Strat that I got when I was a flamboyant young dandy.
Dislike anything blingy or fussy. So, no fancy quilts, no gold hardware. Sunbursts are fine, provided they're not too OTT.
But there are always exceptions to the rule, and some things definitely work on some guitars but not others:
The only time gold hardware is acceptable is on a Les Paul Custom (or Strat #0001), which is also the only time an LP can be white. Otherwise, a subtle burst or gold top. SGs should be black or cherry. LP Juniors / Specials - best in cherry or TV yellow.
Just about anything on a Strat is fine (I actually think red is one of the iconic colours), but they need a light-coloured pickguard - not a fan of black. (Which is of course why my sunburst S-type has a black guard; still, at least it's not torty, which are almost always an abomination.)
A special place in hell should be reserved for whoever came up with that Antigua burst, though. I can't unsee that...
