I loaned my bandmate for a couple of gigs a few years ago and whilst it was very good I missed the sound of my bad cat.  I do love a good ac15 cranked tho -with blues of course

Is that the one with no EF86?
that ac15 is a lovely amp, the ef86 ones just have an extra option.

I had the older model with the TV front, it's what led me on to a DC30
My P90s certainly sound spectacular through the dc30, so I can imagine the fun you are having

certainly most people need seriously consider one of these style of amps

You've done the right thing. I had the 30 watt for a few years. If I could offer one piece of advice... don't try to mod it. It's totally great exactly as it is, I made the mistake of thinking it could be turned into a vintage spec amp and ended up losing the things that make the HW series unique - the tighter, higher headroom vox sound.

I'm interested (of course!)....but do you mean amps with EL84's?  Do you mean because they produce a very specific or classic sound?

I'd describe it as very musical.

But is it because it's this Vox or are you saying the style of amps with EL84's are musical/good news (generally speaking)?

EL84 power stages are very variable from amp to amp in my experience. The single best amp I’ve ever played was a Samson era Matchless DC30 - there was something about the way it broke up/compressed that I’ll never forget. I sounded fantastic through that amp - so it must have been doing something good....

My current amp (Mesa LSS) has an EL84 output stage - it’s a nice sounding amp - but not in the same league as the Matchless.

I think the ‘magic’ is in the circuit design and implementation, rather than the type of valve.

    I mean Vox-derived amps specifically

A lot of other Marshally-style amps use EL84s,
and the Watkins-derived EL84 amps too

Thanks @ToneControl, @richardhomer that's helpful to me.  They're not a style of amp I've gravitated towards previously.  There are more amps around these days it seems that allow for valve switching or even having EL84's and 6V6's at the same time.  I suppose it's a question of just trying them out....

The wife bought me one of these a good few christmases ago with the blue in it.
    Gorgeous amps.
Stupidly traded it for something I can't even remember what.
    Brilliantly made too.

I only sold it because the DC30 does the same thing a little better

In fact, I reckon that demo does not do it justice. I mostly played it on a strat neck pickup

Matchless and Badcat do EL34 amps that have similar tone as well

My Matchless Independence and Badcat hotcat had lovely chimey cleans

yes, I had a clone DC30 before I got a real one, and played the 2 side by side, the clone was only 65% there
Also the speaker made a huge difference: for the DC30 sound, even my Celestion golds couldn't match the fine-tuned, doped contrasting pair that Matchless use in their cabs.
With the Matchless cab, the clone was 75% there. The range on the pots was very different too. There must be a huge amount of fine tuning in getting something as good as a DC30
