The easiest to use that I've found is the old mxr envelope filter - two knobs and useable sounds right around the dial. If you can find one I highly recommend trying it out.
For an always on type envelope to give your attack some edge the Boss FT-2 Dynamic Filter. I love this pedal and it's the one I always come back to. You can plug in an expression pedal and use it as a standard wah but it really excels as a standalone. It's not a very versatile pedal; you have to set the controls correctly to get it to trip the effect, but once it is set it's an addictive sound.
in fact that TPS episode made me think exactly of it. Special pedal that
I also liked the dod fx25. I think that's it - funky green box, very popular with bassists and guitarists.
The FX-25 (the original 2-knob one, the 3-knob isn't as good) is probably my favourite-sounding plain envelope filter - it's really aggressive and powerful-sounding, but it's *very* touchy to set up, basically it only has one good setting with any given guitar - but when you find it, it's great.

The Guyatone Wah Rocker is pretty good and the MP Snow White.
I just find a lot of EFs or auto wahs today are thin-sounding and more phasery wah than quacky wah
Yes! It's so much fun. Sounds great too.
The dod is a pain to set up, but it's pretty set and forget.
- Go to 26 mins - now when he flicks the switch, that's the sound I don't like that's similar to some of the latter-day EFs & Auto-Wahs but the original sound is good.
