stuck the figerboard on last night
cut it down with bandsaw and router table

marked out the neck for shaping then got stuck in with the Shinto saw rasp

got the bulk of the shape done then attacked the ends with some Japanese rasps - brilliant tools

Thicknessed the headstock using a spindle sander

radiused the fingerboard (12inch) then sanded and polished - recut the fret slots and beveled them and
whacked in the frets and trimmed and filed flush then angled

what will tomorrow bring?
Next, cut out the body and top on the bandsaw then stuck them together.

Neck sanding - 120 up to 320 grit the made the nut from bone and slotted it and fitted it. More neck sanding....
neck side dots fitted.
Then unclamped the glued together body.

Took this to the router table and trimmed down to the template. Clamped the neck in exact position in order to create a neck pocket template in place

Template made, off to the pillar drill to clear out the bulk of the wood from the pocket with a forstner bit!

And thats it for today.
Tomorrow is rout the neck pocket, rout the rest of the body, lots and lots of sanding.....
Anyway... routed out the neck pocket and fitted the neck - bang in line!

Drilled neck ferrules and screw holes...
https://i.imgur.com/k8u1rhC.jpg
Routed the pickup and control cavities.

Turned the body over and radiused the low edge then carved out the belly cut.

Neck fitted then then drilled for the bridge and stop tail.
https://i.imgur.com/kemrkYE.jpg
Then take it it apart and LOTS of sanding....
tomorrow - more sanding then staining (scary) and oil. Make scratchplate. Begin assembly? We’ll see...
Sanding..... much sanding.....
And then....
Staining - headstock came out great
https://i.imgur.com/mkZAMvY.jpg
Same approach to the body body less successful - this is due to the wood darkening the stain more and showing more variance across the wood...

Sadly, oiling has made this worse
i turned to the scratchplate which is made from burl poplar.... I had intended to try staining this too but the risk of yet another different reaction to the stain is too great so it will just be oiled. In a world with more time this would have resin impregnated but I play finger style so this shouldn’t be too much of a problem.

Routed the neck cutout into the scratchplate

None of the the issues were problems with the stain, more a lack of foresight on my part when selecting wood - I should have gone with a flame maple top which would have taken the stain better.
Pub.
More later
Anyway - it’s all together now - scratchplate routed out and oiled, hardware and electronics installed (no soldering done yet though). Neck installed with a one and a half degree back angle (planed off the heel of the neck). Cavity shielded with conductive paint.
Setup done - nut finished, bridge height set, strung and tuned.

tomorrow is the electronics and that’s it...
A couple of important credits. Obviously the guys at Crimson Guitars, especially Christopher, for instruction, guidance, assistance, crisis aversion etc.
Secondly, Jaime at The Creamery for the amazing Strat P90s - made in double quick time - incredible customer service, I’ll be back for more.
