Mics. Rode NT1A - or is that overkill?

Got the interface.  Got the laptop.  Got the DAW.

What I don’t have - yet - is a suitably decent mic for vocals and acoustic guitar.

So, seeking guidance from the knowledgeable ....

1.  Will the same mic be suitable for both voice & guitar
2.  Is a Rode NT1A overkill for self-amusement recording
3.  Is there something that’s 95% as good for 50% of the cost

Thx

The NT1A is a good mic, if a touch bright sounding. I've used it on loads of stuff. One problem you might find is it's quite sensitive so picks up a lot of ambient noise. You're in the sticks though, I seem to remember so should be fine for you. I remember though a vocal take being ruined by a neighbours dog before I had a studio :)

SM58 and 57 are my go to all rounders.  Get good acoustic sounds around a foot from the 12th-14th fret, pointing at the soundhole.  Tough and knockabout, use them on amps too and thrown in case for gigs,

This was the best deal I found: https://www.studiospares.com/audio-technica-at2020-stand-+-pop-filter-bundle_447072.htm

  • Not overkill at all.

Definitely not overkill - it's an entry level mic.

I'm an audio technica fan but I wouldn't go for the at2020, it sounds brittle and cheap IMO.

For vocals the AKG D5 would be much better than any condenser and is about 50 quid. It will also record acoustic guitar but not particularly well. Then again, if you're just doing it for fun it's not exactly a horrible sound.

Look on Youtube for acoustic guitar recorded with an SM57 - if you think that sounds acceptable, you'll be happy with the 50 quid AKG D5 for vocals and acoustic guitar.
