I think I lack the self awareness and subsequent inhibitions it brings to be honest, it's a blessing and a curse :)

I'm with my current plan to reinterpret No More Heroes as a triumphant instrumental chip-metal anthem.

If it helps at all I know I can sing reasonably well and have known that for 20+ years. It still took me 3.5 years between the point MrsF buying me an interface and a mic and the point I actually recorded anything, and another few months before I was happy to post anything online.

I’m also happy to do some vocals (lead and/or harmonies) for other folks if that’s useful - good for expanding my own comfort zone as well as learning more about engineering & production of vocals!

As for taking it seriously, Im on holiday but currently have a list of about 10 tracks I’m considering attacking and using this very much as a starting point to a potential post-corporate-life career

So I don’t even care that much about scoring points as long as I’m learning stuff and making better recordings :)

(though obviously I still like dopamine so please give me points :) )

For N I'm attempting a close-ish cover, but O (which was decided long ago) will be very different.

I'm currently putting off recording vocals for another N cover as it's a band I've covered before... A band with very iconic and impossible for me to emulate vocals. But I never learn my lesson, especially when the guitars and bass are so much fun!

It took my years to feel comfortable just recording my normal voice (FWIW the "master, master where's the dream that I've been after" part in MOP is my usual voice).  I found that doing characters/impressions was much easier to start with, even though I had heard recordings of myself from musicals I'd been in and know I can hold a tune okay.

I'd hope that nobody should worry to much about recording vocals for their track. We've always arrived to make this a safe space for either a first try or really messing around and in confident we can keep it that way. Everyone here knows how daunting it can be and I for one respects anyone that gives it a try

And I'm always happy to lend vocals if needed

It's not fear of reaction. I cannot make myself sing if people will hear it. Literally nothing comes out.

I may in future take up an offer of someone providing vocals, if it's still open once you've heard my work.

Hah - but how do you know that O will be next?

I've never done the official song yet. It's the kind of rebel that I am. =)

This time I'm being smarter. I've just recorded a guitar track and I'm already trying to sing over it to avoid having a lot of work building a backing track to then find out I'm unable to sing over it. Let's see what happens.

In regards to @flying_pie saying that doing impersonations is easier, I think that's essentially how I've learnt to sing. I didn't really sing to be heard outside of my room until my late 20s (in fact the first thing I really recorded with any vocals on was Fretboard Challenge #2 back in 2014! I'd like to think I've come some way since then in many ways ). But the way I worked on it without lessons was to listen to singers I liked and basically mimic them as much as I could. I'm quite good at accents when I talk also, so i thought best to play to my strengths.

At various points i've learnt how to do impressions of Jeff Buckley, Thom York, Art Garfunkel, Lou Reed/Julian Casablancas (basically the same sound), Fran Healy (travis), the singers in the (fairly niche) band The XX, Lennon, Nick Drake, Damon Albarn, that kind of thing, even taken elements of others whom I can never sound like but can take little techniques from - Chris Cornell, Laura Marling, Matt Bellamy, Jacob Collier. Without really sounding like any of them but adding some stolen personality into my basic voice. Hence many of my covers tend to be along those lines!

(also happy to offer to do guest Vocals if it's within my range!)

Great idea. Let's get together and do a strict cover of Never Forget by Take That

I've sent in my first entry! It's not Never Forget by Take That, don't worry.

It's probably the most predictable self-explanatory cover ever considering my voice type and music taste, but it's a song I love and I'm quite happy with having built the full arrangement up from listening to the recording way too many times

Okay. I'm always up for something daft. I'll call your bluff and propose we actually do it

Are you thinking a Night Fever/Staying Alive type vibe? Obviously the "doo doo doo" should be replaced with a Staying Alive style "Aah. aah aah"

We can continue this via PMs
