Just wondering after reading the David Gilmore thread...

Given the limited supply of working prog masters of the 70s, who would you all rate as producing interesting, arty electric music in the next generation or two?

Preferably while they are still a bit underground, and without ticket prices ramped by corporate types who regard themselves as too groovy for golf.

    David Gilmore
    Who indeed?

    G I L M O U R

As for future masters, all roads currently seem to lead to Steven Wilson.

    GILMOUR!

Although I'm more of a David Gilmore fan, tbh. And I'm not joking, I really like David Gilmore.

As for prog, I'm so glad it's dead and buried as a genre.

Saw them supporting Hawkwind a few weeks ago. They were rather good!

Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree etc.) also begs to disagree with the death of progressive music  ;)

A bad case of winter flu and all the prog rock fans left will be in their graves, I'm afraid.

How edgy and unkind. Would you honestly say that to the crowd in person and not from behind your keyboard?

Ah the "I've not heard of or looked into any <genre> since its brief moment in the spotlight X years ago therefore it's a dead genre" bores are out, I see.

There are plenty of prog rock and metal bands around, but I don't think any prog band will ever hit the mainstream success that some achieved in the 70s. That doesn't mean there won't always be people who want to make and listen to that kind of music.

Same argument applies to "rock is dead", "guitar music is dead" etc.

No it's not, you're just ignorant and most people past a certain age stop seeking out new music and like what they like.

It’s worth defining ‘dead’ too. Which should be pretty simple. Most things ebb and flow.

There are loads and loads of modern prog rock artists - there just aren't any who have broken through to the mainstream because it's not the 70s or 80s any more.

I think there is still a magazine devoted to prog, which is incredible when even Q died on it's ass during covid.
