As you say, shaving is seriously tedious but keeping a beard tidy is no less tedious, and it can make you look like an insufferable hipster, depending on the style.
A proper razor.
Closer than a disposable or a fusion wotsit, And the blades cost pennies.

if you are going to shave, get a proper razor and save a ton on blades!
I use straight razors that I sharpen myself. Probably not the closest shave possible but certainly the most exhilarating. You never know when you're going to sustain serious injury.
I use Gillette Fusion replaceable heads until I literally start taking my skin off and look like Chopped Liver (2 months-ish), as I am a tight fisted Yorkshireman and they cost a fortune.
I'm not really one for growing out a full tache and beard and I think a "Fashioned/Sculpted" beard/facial hair, would be more work than just shaving. Each to their own though.
I haven't been completely clean shaven for at least the last 15 years. I had a goatee for most of that time, for the last two years I've had a full beard - or as near as I can get to one. It's not very thick, won't grow long and hipsterish but it looks OK. I trim it about once a month.
I do shave my neck once a week, with my Gillette Contour Plus which I've had since university days. They don't make the blades any more, as far as I know, but you can get them on eBay and Amazon. I use the blades until they're at least half a dozen shaves past their best because I'm as tight as a gnat's chuff.
I'd never use a straight razor or let anyone else near me with one. Seen too many horror movies.
