Bit more progress, though not worth posting any pictures.

I leveled, crowned and polished the frets this afternoon.  They were miles out - the only real 'well what do expect for that money?' item I've come to so far.  I'm really impressed with these kits.

Presently adding the progressive layers of varnish so now focusing on the scratchplate and electrics.  Because of the position of the pickups and, of course, my additional carvings (!) I am a bit limited to what shape it can be, but I reckon something like this:

    image

I was going to follow the shape of the cutout at the top of the neck pocket with the scratchplate but first thoughts are that it looks too contrived.  I'll cut out another paper template this evening and have another look.

As the varnish starts building up, the veneer is starting to look how I wanted it:

Something like this is the alternative (and maybe with a straighter bottom curve):

"That goose just stole my wing mirror!!"

    :)

Beautiful colour Andy it's going to be awesome, and I agree with Wez, the goose one is the best.

Did you two grow up looking at ink patterns on blotting paper???   :))

There I was thinking I'd created elegant and slim swifts and now all I can see is a great big fat goose
    ;)

...I can see a goose now in all the options...

Do you inhale when varnishing ???

Of course... but it's just that the pink elephants and green-eyed lizards clash so dreadfully with all the geese!

OK  After a bit of cold-turkey, I've double checked the shape of the pickguard to accommodate the large pickup cavity and adjusted it accordingly.  All I can see now is turkeys (and yes - before you say it - quite )

I've transferred the shape onto my white / black/ white triple ply sheet ready to cut out.

    Totting up 'still to do's':
    • Tidy up the body cutouts
    • Finish varnishing body
    • Finish varnishing headstock
    • Consider applying  a soft 'V' to the neck profile (my much preferred)
    • Apply thin coat of matt varnish to neck
    • Fit new roller bridge
    • Check neck angle, adjust and assemble
    • Take the locking tuners and SD P-rails off my 'donor'
    • Fit electrics
    • Wipe big silly grin off face  >:D<
By the way - I'm banking on this comp finishing end August and not July??!!

Cut the pickguard - without the bottom cutout at first (can always do that later if I decide I'd prefer it)

Quite like it but bit stark?....maybe with the MOP swifts pearloid would be better?  Trouble is, pearloid often looks naff!

    Hi @sinbaadi ;

    Thanks!
Yes - the indoor shots don't really bring it out (I think there's something a bit squiffy about my camera light exposure settings).  This is closer to what it looks like in real life.

I've never tried it, but I could try to route the top white layer off the scratchplate for something like this?:

    image

I'll try it on a bit of scrap and see if it works...

Well - it's a definite possibility.   So I didn't knacker a decent router bit, I used an old broken one and got this in the time to drink a cup of tea  :)

    image

It didn't gum up the bit either.  With a decent bit, the sides would be a lot cleaner (and would tidy up with a scalpel anyway).

Might give it a go if I stick to this general pickguard shape.

For better or for worse, done it.

For me, I now see swifts again....no doubt for you, it's a goose with tatoos!
    :))

Still got to chamfer the edges to get the white/black/white showing and probably just tweak the shape a tad. but as they say, it's close enough for jazz!

Next is re-sanding the cutouts, then a gadzillion coats of varnish / slurry
