    Thanks @Clarky, you have answered the question I was going to post before I had even phrased it.
    That does make pragmatic sense to me.  The flexibility of this is a bit of a mixed blessing without guidance.

    Bit of an odd update on the Axe, but then if they'd have made it more powerful, but not backwards compatible they'd be getting slated for turning into a Line 6 short life span kind of company.

    As long as the CPU isn't what is holding them back, then why change for the sake of it?

    As long as the CPU isn't what is holding them back, then why change for the sake of it?
    Cliff says that he wanted to change the midi pedal connection to XLR, which meant re-engineering the circuit board. So while he was doing this he incorporated some other engineering changes, such as swapping the mechanical rotary control for an optical one.
