From a storytelling perspective there is only one: Kentucky Avenue by Tom Waits.

It's about a kid he knew at school who had polio and wore leg braces, there is a killer line towards the end...  I'll steel a hacksaw from my dad and cut the braces off your legs, and we'll bury them tonight out in the corn field... just gets me every single time.

A beautiful, beautiful song in every respect.

    Vic Chesnutt - Lucinda Williams

I have to choke it back every time he gets to the line "My heroes are all off in the great beyond".  It's just an amazing and beautiful song, and it's the kind of thing that gets you thinking about all the people you've lost from your life.

    Tom Waits - Time

    REM - Hairshirt

    Cancer - My Chemical Romance

The entire Black Parade album is very dark, as it is about a terminal cancer patient from diagnosis to passing to the other side, in reverse, but Cancer is one song that gets me every time.

Other is, I wasn't expecting that - Jamie Lawson.

I know a few people who think it's a cheery song, until I've pointed them in the direction of the video, or they've actually listened to the lyrics.

OH and I forgot the clear winner........
WHEN I'M OLD AND WISE ................Alan Parsons Project ...perhaps somebody could post it for me or the Sinatra 'cos I can't make either work
Colin Blunstone still tours and sings it superbly - he's well worth seeing.

Had to play the Jamie Lawson one for a first dance last year.....The couple appreciated it was a weird choice but parts of the song were appropriate to their relationship.....Even so, my voice cracked every time I practiced the final verse. Think I was too focussed on not messing it up on the night to get teary.

    As already mentioned

Mike And The Mechanics - Living Years

Also because the harmonies do it for me right at the end as it fades:

Deacon Blue - When will you make my phone ring

    Edit
Transpires the backing vocals were by London beat of 'I've been thinking bout you' fame.

    Hallelujah.

Except when it's sung by someone from X Factor. Then it just brings out indignant rage for some reason.
Shot through the heart, and you’re to blame, you give love a bad name. Not to mention archery tuition.
